عند أصحابَ المزيَّهْ

Your haste, O man, is blameworthy

Human haste is blameworthy

among people of distinction.

ذمَّها كلُّ البرايا

ذمَّها كلُّ البرايا

في دواوين القَضيّهْ

في دواوين القَضيّهْ

All humankind has condemned it

All creation has condemned it

in the records of the case.

in the records of judgment.

عجلةُ الإنسان خيرٌ

عجلةُ الإنسان خيرٌ

من توانِ في العطيَّه

من توانِ في العطيَّه

Yet your haste, O man, is better

Human haste is better

than delay in giving;

than slackness in giving.

وكذا الإمْهَالُ شينٌ

وكذا الإمْهَالُ شينٌ

عند أصحابِ السَّجيَّه

عند أصحابِ السَّجيَّه

and likewise, withholding is a blemish

And delay, likewise, is a blemish

among those of noble character.

ليسَ في العجلةِ خيرٌ

ليسَ في العجلةِ خيرٌ

يرتجى عند البريَّه

There is no good in haste

إنما الحاذقُ لا يعجلُ

في أمر الرَّعيِّهْ

Only the astute man does not rush

Indeed, the discerning do not rush

in affairs of the people.

إنما الإمْهال زينٌ

إنما الإمْهال زينٌ

في العقولِ الألْمَعِيَّهْ

في العقولِ الألْمَعِيَّهْ

Deliberation alone is an adornment

Delay is indeed an adornment

in brilliant minds;

to brilliant minds.

وكذا العجلةُ عيبٌ

وكذا العجلةُ عيبٌ

في سَجيَّات البريَّهْ

في سَجيَّات البريَّهْ

and likewise, haste is a flaw

And haste, likewise, is a fault

in human character.

among the traits of humankind.

إنما الإفراطُ في العجلة

إنما الإفراطُ في العجلة

إلاّ في العطيَّه

إلاّ في العطيَّه

Excess lies in haste alone—

Excess lies only in haste,

except when it comes to giving.

والونَى خيرٌ لأصحابِ

القضايَا في القضيه

Deliberateness is better for those entrusted

And slowness is better for those

with judgments in a case.

ليس في الإمهالِ خيرٌ

ليس في الإمهالِ خيرٌ

في سجياتِ البريَّه

في سجياتِ البريَّه

Yet there is no good in delay

There is no good in delay

among the traits of humankind;

إنما الخير تراهُ

إنما الخير تراهُ

عند تعجيلِ القضيَّه

عند تعجيلِ القضيَّه

rather, the good, as you see it,

You see goodness only

lies in hastening the decision.

ليس في العجلةِ خيرٌ

ليس في العجلةِ خيرٌ

لأولى النفسِ الأبيَّه

لأولى النفسِ الأبيَّه

There is no good in haste

for those of proud, unbowed spirit.

إنما الإفراطُ فيهَا

إنما الإفراطُ فيهَا

وهي أسبابُ المَنِيَّه

وهي أسبابُ المَنِيَّه

For excess in it alone

breeds the causes of death.

إنما العجلةُ في بعضِ

الفضيّاتِ رَضِيَّه

Yet haste in certain

matters of silver is pleasing;

وأرَى الإمْهَالَ فيها

وأرَى الإمْهَالَ فيها

من رَدَاءَاتِ السَّجيَّه

من رَدَاءَاتِ السَّجيَّه

and I deem delay in them

And I see delay in them

one of the vices of character.

إنما خيرُ السجيّه

عجلةٌ عند العَطيَّه

عجلةٌ عند العَطيَّه

The best of character is simply

Indeed, the best trait is

your haste when giving;

كلُّ مَنْ يبغى سِواهَا

كلُّ مَنْ يبغى سِواهَا

ناقصٌ عند البريَّهْ

ناقصٌ عند البريَّهْ

whoever seeks other than that

Everyone who seeks something else

is wanting in the eyes of humankind.

is deficient in the eyes of humankind.

يمدحُ العجلةَ يا ذَا

يمدحُ العجلةَ يا ذَا

وهي أسبابُ المَنيِّه

وهي أسبابُ المَنيِّه

He praises haste, O man,

He praises haste, O you,

though it is among the causes of death.

فامدحْ الإمهالَ مدحاً

فامدحْ الإمهالَ مدحاً

فهو من خيرِ السجيَّهْ

فهو من خيرِ السجيَّهْ

Then praise deliberation richly,

So give delay your praise,

for it is among the finest traits.

لا تعبْ تعجيلَ قومٍ

لا تعبْ تعجيلَ قومٍ

عند أصحابِ المزيَّه

عند أصحابِ المزيَّه

Do not fault a people's promptness:

Do not fault people's haste

among people of distinction,

in the presence of people of merit.

لاَ ولاَ الإمهال لومٌ

لاَ ولاَ الإمهال لومٌ

في سجيّاتِ البَريَّه

في سجيّاتِ البَريَّه

neither it nor deliberation merits blame

No, nor is delay blameworthy

in the varied characters of humankind.

فضعِ العجلةَ في مَوْ

فضعِ العجلةَ في مَوْ

ضِعها في الجليَّه

ضِعها في الجليَّه

So set haste in its proper—

So put haste in its

place, in matters plain to see;

place, in what is clear.

وضعِ الإمهالَ في مَو

وضعِ الإمهالَ في مَو

ضِعه يا ذَا المزيَّه

ضِعه يا ذَا المزيَّه

and set deliberation in its proper—

And put delay in its

place, O man of distinction.
