    وأشهى من الماء الزلازلِ وأعذبُ

    A greeting like musk’s scent—nay, it is more fragrant;

    And more delectable than limpid water, and sweeter;

    وأعذب من رِيقِ الحبيبِ وأطيبُ

    And sweeter than honey mingled with clear, sweet water;

    And sweeter than the beloved’s saliva, and more pleasing.

    Its fragrance surpasses the scent of aromatic plants,

    And shames the scent of aloeswood when it is turned.

    The hearts of the lovelorn are soothed by its beauty,

    And it dispels sorrows whenever it is voiced.

    And if its words are recited in gatherings,

    A child, a middle-aged man, and a gray-haired elder are made well by them.

    It contains meaningful words, as though they were

    Necklaces of rubies—nay, they are more wondrous.

    وحَنَّ إلى وادى العَقيق مُعَذَّبُ

    And fair praise, as long as rain clouds pour their showers,

    And one in torment yearns for the valley of al-Aqiq;

    And mention of greetings that renew what has passed

    Of affection and tender concern—what is never effaced.

    فَتى ماجدٌ ندبٌ شجاعٌ مُجرِّبُ

    I offer it especially to the virtuous, generous Muhammad,

    A noble young man, gallant, brave, and experienced;

    A man of virtue, kindness, good cheer, and contentment.

    He is esteemed, beloved in every heart.

    And it was fitting that we visit your dwellings,

    Upon our heads we would hasten, not ride upon camels.

    And you wish us to walk barefoot to visit you,

    But a desert and a vast plain lie in the way of that.

    So may fate never lower your standing, and never

    Have we spoken of you except in polished praise.
