مَرّتshe passed كخوطِlike a slender shoot الخيزرانةِthe bamboo غادةٌa graceful maiden
مَرّت كخوطِ الخيزرانةِ غادةٌ
تَسْبىshe captivates العقولَthe intellects وتخطفand she snatches away الأذْهانَاthe minds
تَسْبى العقولَ وتخطف الأذْهانَا
A graceful maiden passed, like a slender bamboo shoot,
She passed by like the lines of tattoos, Ghadah
captivating reason and snatching minds away.
Captivating minds and stealing thoughts
لوif تطلبُshe asks for المالَthe wealth النفيسprecious تواصلاًfor closeness
لو تطلبُ المالَ النفيس تواصلاً
مِنْfrom عندin the possession of كلِّall العالمينthe world's people لهَانَاthen it would be a trifle
مِنْ عند كلِّ العالمين لهَانَا
If she asked for precious wealth in exchange for closeness,
If you were to seek precious wealth persistently
from all the world's people, it would be a trifle.
From all people, it would be disgraced
شمسيةَsunlike قمريةٌmoonlike رشئيّةٌlike a young gazelle
شمسيةَ قمريةٌ رشئيّةٌ
تذكارُهاremembering her عنaway from ديننَاour faith أَلهَانَاit distracted us
تذكارُها عن ديننَا أَلهَانَا
Sunlike, moonlike, like a young gazelle,
Sun-like, moon-like, delightful
the thought of her distracted us from our faith.
The memory of her has distracted our religion
لماwhen رأتنيshe saw me واقفاstanding بطريقهاin her path
لما رأتني واقفا بطريقها
فتنفرتْthen she recoiled بلrather أنكرتْshe denied ماwhat كانَاhad been
فتنفرتْ بل أنكرتْ ما كانَا
When she saw me standing in her path,
When she saw me standing in her way
she recoiled—nay, denied what had been.
She recoiled, even denied what was
ياO هذهyou, this woman ماhow أطيبَpleasant الدنياworldly life لوif only أنّthat
يا هذه ما أطيبَ الدنيا لو أنّ
هراكَpossibly 'your desire'; the word is unclear فيin كلِّall الأمورthe matters هوانَاour desire
هراكَ في كلِّ الأمور هوانَا
O you, how pleasant life would be, if only
O you, how good life would be if only
your desire [uncertain reading] in all matters were ours.
Seeing you in all matters were disgraced
أوليتَyou bestowed upon أفئدةhearts الرجالِof the men بُعَيْدَshortly after ماwhen
أوليتَ أفئدة الرجالِ بُعَيْدَ ما
فارقْتِyou left جيرتهمtheir neighborhood هَوّىpassion وهَوانَاand humiliation
فارقْتِ جيرتهم هَوّى وهَوانَا
You bestowed upon men's hearts, shortly after
You have captivated the hearts of men, after
you left their neighborhood, passion and humiliation.
