يا صاحِ نصحاً للنصيحةِ فاقبلا

يا صاحِ نصحاً للنصيحةِ فاقبلا

لا تبغ عن طرقِ الهدايةِ مَعْدَلا

لا تبغ عن طرقِ الهدايةِ مَعْدَلا

O friend, your two advisers have counseled you sincerely—so accept their counsel.

O friend, here is sincere counsel—so accept the advice.

Seek no turning aside from the paths of guidance.

Do not seek a deviation from the paths of guidance.

واتبع شريعةَ أحمدٍ أزكى المَلا

واتبع شريعةَ أحمدٍ أزكى المَلا

إن كنت تبغى أن تُبَوأ منزلا

إن كنت تبغى أن تُبَوأ منزلا

Follow the law of Ahmad, the purest of humankind,

And follow the religious law of Ahmad, the purest of mankind.

if you desire to take up residence in an abode

If you wish to be granted a dwelling

في جنةٍ وتعلّ من فوَّارها

في جنةٍ وتعلّ من فوَّارها

وتكونَ مسروراً بأنس أكارمٍ

وتكونَ مسروراً بأنس أكارمٍ

in a Garden, and drink deeply from its gushing springs,

In a garden of Paradise, and drink repeatedly from its gushing spring,

and rejoice in the fellowship of noble souls,

And be gladdened by the company of noble people,

وصفاءَ مشروبٍ وطيب مطاعمٍ

وصفاءَ مشروبٍ وطيب مطاعمٍ

ولِقاءِ أحبابٍ وحُسْنِ خواتِمِ

ولِقاءِ أحبابٍ وحُسْنِ خواتِمِ

with crystal-clear drink and wholesome foods,

And the purity of drink and the goodness of food,

the meeting of loved ones and blessed endings,

And meeting loved ones and happy endings,

وتريحَ نفسَك في نعيمٍ دائمٍ

وتريحَ نفسَك في نعيمٍ دائمٍ

لا ينطفى أبدً سَنا أنوارِها

لا ينطفى أبدً سَنا أنوارِها

and give your soul rest in everlasting bliss,

And give your soul rest in everlasting bliss,

whose lights’ radiance shall never be extinguished;

The radiance of its lights will never go out.

وتكون في جناتِ عدن مستكنّْ

وتكون في جناتِ عدن مستكنّْ

طولَ المدَى لا خائفاً أو مُفتتنْ

طولَ المدَى لا خائفاً أو مُفتتنْ

and dwell securely in Gardens of Eden

And be sheltered in the Gardens of Eden,

for all eternity, neither fearful nor led into temptation.

For all eternity, neither afraid nor put to trial.

فاسمع لمَا قد قلتُ إنْ كنتَ الفَطِنْ

فاسمع لمَا قد قلتُ إنْ كنتَ الفَطِنْ

فاغسلْ يديكَ بماءِ تقوى اللَّه

فاغسلْ يديكَ بماءِ تقوى اللَّه

Then heed what I have said, if you are discerning.

So listen to what I have said, if you are discerning.

Wash your hands, then, with the water of reverence for God,

So, with the water of reverence for God, wash your hands

من دنياكِ تخلصْ من قَذَى أقذارِها

من دنياكِ تخلصْ من قَذَى أقذارِها

لا ترغبنْ بها وخالفْ شهوة

لا ترغبنْ بها وخالفْ شهوة

of your worldly life, and be rid of the filth of its impurities.

Of your worldly life; you will be freed from the grit of its filth.

Set no desire upon it; oppose appetite,

Do not long for it, and resist desire.

واسأَل من الرحمن عنها عِصْمَة

واسأَل من الرحمن عنها عِصْمَة

هلاَّ رأيتَ المنحَ منها محنَة

هلاَّ رأيتَ المنحَ منها محنَة

and ask the All-Merciful for protection from it.

And ask the Most Merciful for protection from it.

Have you not seen that its gifts are an ordeal?

Why have you not seen its gifts as a trial?

وأَذلَّ نفساً إن تعالتْ رفعة

وأَذلَّ نفساً إن تعالتْ رفعة

لا تعْلُها عن مُنتهى مقدارِها

لا تعْلُها عن مُنتهى مقدارِها

Humble the soul if it exalts itself in rank;

And humble the soul if it exalts itself in rank;

never raise it beyond the utmost bound of its measure.

Do not exalt it beyond the limits of its worth.

لا تمدُدَنْها في خَبائثِ مَتْجِرِ

لا تمدُدَنْها في خَبائثِ مَتْجِرِ

تُرْدِيكَ في ظلماتِ ليلٍ مُدْبِر

تُرْدِيكَ في ظلماتِ ليلٍ مُدْبِر

Never send it into commerce in vile wares

Do not stretch it into the vile practices of trade,

that would plunge you into the darkness of a waning night.

Which plunge you into the darkness of a departing night.

خالِفْ هَواها عن مواردِ مُنْكَرِ

خالِفْ هَواها عن مواردِ مُنْكَرِ

وإذا أردت قطيفَ يانعٍ مثمرٍ

وإذا أردت قطيفَ يانعٍ مثمرٍ

Oppose its desire for the watering places of wrongdoing.

Resist its desires, turning away from the watering places of wrongdoing.

And when you desire some freshly plucked fruit, ripe and laden,

And if you seek a ripe, fruitful harvest

مما زها سارعْ إلى إنكارِها

مما زها سارعْ إلى إنكارِها

واكففْ يديها في السرائر والعَلَنْ

واكففْ يديها في السرائر والعَلَنْ

from whatever glitters, hasten to reject it.

From what has flourished, hasten to reject it.

Restrain its hands, in private and in public,

And restrain its hands, in secret and in the open.

فجميعُ ما تهواه يهوَى للفِتَنِ

فجميعُ ما تهواه يهوَى للفِتَنِ

واحذرْ مصائِدَها فإنك تمتحنْ

واحذرْ مصائِدَها فإنك تمتحنْ

for everything it desires inclines toward temptation.

For all it desires is drawn toward temptation.

Beware its snares, for you are being tested.

And beware its snares, for you will be tested.

واحذر مِنَ الدنيا وزهرتها بأَنْ

واحذر مِنَ الدنيا وزهرتها بأَنْ

تَلوى عِنانَك في هَوى أبكارها

تَلوى عِنانَك في هَوى أبكارها

Beware the world and all its bloom, lest

And beware the world and its bloom, for

it twist your reins toward passion for its virgin charms.

It turns your reins toward longing for its maidens.

خالفْ أُهْيلَ الغيِّ في أهوائِهمْ

خالفْ أُهْيلَ الغيِّ في أهوائِهمْ

لا تغتررْ بالفعلِ من كبرائِهمْ

لا تغتررْ بالفعلِ من كبرائِهمْ

Oppose the little band of error in their whims;

Oppose the folk of error in their desires.

do not be deceived by the conduct of their great men.

Do not be deceived by the conduct of their leaders.

واتبع أهيلَ الحق في دَعْوَاهم

واتبع أهيلَ الحق في دَعْوَاهم

لا تَعْصَ أهل الدين في آرائهم

لا تَعْصَ أهل الدين في آرائهم

Follow the people of truth in what they profess,

And follow the folk of truth in what they proclaim.

and do not disobey the people of faith in their counsel.

Do not disobey the people of faith in their views.

وأطع إلهك راضياً أو كارها

وأطع إلهك راضياً أو كارها

إن شئتَ أن تحظى بغايات المُنَى

إن شئتَ أن تحظى بغايات المُنَى

Obey your God, willingly or unwillingly,

And obey your God, willingly or unwillingly.

if you wish to attain the utmost of your hopes

If you wish to attain the utmost of your hopes,

وتكونَ في يوم القيامةِ آمنَا

وتكونَ في يوم القيامةِ آمنَا

خالفْ هوَى نفسٍ لتضحى مؤمنَا

خالفْ هوَى نفسٍ لتضحى مؤمنَا

and to be safe on Resurrection Day.

And be safe on the Day of Resurrection,

Oppose the soul’s desire, so that you may become a believer.

Resist the soul's desires, so that you become a believer.

فالخير كلُّ الخيرِ كفّ نفوسنا

فالخير كلُّ الخيرِ كفّ نفوسنا

عن زيفها والشرُّ في إنكارها

عن زيفها والشرُّ في إنكارها

For good—all good—is the restraining of our souls

For goodness—all goodness—lies in restraining our souls

from their deceit; and evil lies in denying that.

From their deceit; and evil lies in their denial.
