ثلاثٌthree حِلّىadornments للرجالِfor men فَهَاكِهَاso take them
ثلاثٌ حِلّى للرجالِ فَهَاكِهَا
تلوحthey gleam بسطرin a line الطِّرْسthe parchment كالبدرlike the full moon فيin الدُّجَىnight's darkness
تلوح بسطر الطِّرْس كالبدر في الدُّجَى
Three adornments are for men—so take them:
Roses are three for men, their fruit
They gleam in a line on the parchment like the full moon in night's darkness.
Gleams in brocade like the moon in gloom.
مكارمُnoble qualities أخلاقٍof character وبِشْرٌand cheerfulness يزينُهُadorns him
مكارمُ أخلاقٍ وبِشْرٌ يزينُهُ
معwith الناسpeople محمودٌpraiseworthy وثالثهاand their third الحجىwisdom
مع الناس محمودٌ وثالثها الحجى
Noble character, and cheerfulness that adorns him,
Virtues adorn them and gracious mien,
Praiseworthy among people; and the third is wisdom.
Fame amongst people, and thirdly, wisdom.
