لا خيرَ في مستقبلٍ أو حاضرٍ

لا خيرَ في مستقبلٍ أو حاضرٍ

فاسمعْ أخى كلاًّ ولا في أولِ

فاسمعْ أخى كلاًّ ولا في أولِ

There is no good in the future or the present,

There is no good in the future or present

So hear it all, my brother—nor in the past.

So listen, my brother, to both and first

ذهبتْ لذاذةُ أولاً فانظر ترى

ذهبتْ لذاذةُ أولاً فانظر ترى

نالتك لذةُ مرتجىً مستقبلِ

نالتك لذةُ مرتجىً مستقبلِ

First, pleasure has passed away; look, and you will see:

The sweetness of the first is gone, so look and see

The pleasure of a future hope has reached you.

Did you get the sweetness of the hoped for future

أمَّا الذي حضرتْ لذاذته فقد

أمَّا الذي حضرتْ لذاذته فقد

قنعتْ عُيونُك منه فاسمعْ واعملِ

قنعتْ عُيونُك منه فاسمعْ واعملِ

As for that whose delight has arrived, indeed,

As for what was present in its sweetness, your eyes

Your eyes have had their fill of it; so listen and act.

Have had their fill of it, so listen and act

هذا محالٌ من مقالِك لم يكن

هذا محالٌ من مقالِك لم يكن

هلْ أنتَ ناشٍ من حصى أو جندلِ

هلْ أنتَ ناشٍ من حصى أو جندلِ

This claim of yours is absurd; it was not so.

This talk of yours was not so, it did not exist

Are you sprung from pebbles or boulders?

Are you forgetting stones or acacia pods?

أعطِ القيادَ فلا تكنْ متنكباً

أعطِ القيادَ فلا تكنْ متنكباً

لا بدّ في الدنيا لنا من منزلِ

لا بدّ في الدنيا لنا من منزلِ

Yield the reins, and do not turn aside.

Give the lead, do not refuse to bear the load

In this world, we must have a dwelling.

We must have an abode in this world

إن أنت نكَّبت الهوى عن أولِ

إن أنت نكَّبت الهوى عن أولِ

أو حاضرٍ لا بد من مستقبلِ

أو حاضرٍ لا بد من مستقبلِ

If you turn desire away from the past

If you spurn love of the first

Or the present, there must be a future.

Or present, you still need the future
