I truly marvel at the people of our time,

who have not treated their sick companions justly.

People's aim in worship is that they—

if they have not visited within three days—desist.

And I say: even if it lasts a year, let not

the patient be shunned; rather, let him be visited and find companionship.

And if someone among the people suffers for a long time,

they cease visiting him and affect good manners.

If you possess reason and forbearance, then follow

the truth I have spoken, and leave what they have written.

And leave shyness behind your back, and be steadfast

in visiting the sick, for you are the fair-minded one.

And if you fall ill and a young man does not visit you, do not

reproach him; be as though you were oblivious.

And if the hand of calamities strikes him with sorrow,

visit him swiftly; let no affectation beset you.
