ثلاثٌthree things يصيرُbecomes الحرّthe free man فيهاthrough them مشرفاًhonored
ثلاثٌ يصيرُ الحرّ فيها مشرفاً
ويكرمُand he is honored فيin الأخرىthe Hereafter بهنَّthrough them وفيand in الدهرِone's lifetime
ويكرمُ في الأخرى بهنَّ وفي الدهرِ
Three things through which a free man gains honor,
Three things make a man honored and sublime-
And through them he is honored in the Hereafter and throughout life:
When blessed with riches, knowledge and piety in time.
فدينٌnamely, religion وعلمٌand knowledge ثمthen مالwealth يحوزهhe possesses it
فدينٌ وعلمٌ ثم مال يحوزه
وتنفعُهand they benefit him فيin حلّهhis dwelling طيبgood الأجرِthe reward
وتنفعُه في حلّه طيب الأجرِ
Religion, knowledge, and then wealth he possesses,
With wealth he does all he wills, dire needs decline-
And they benefit him in his dwelling with a good reward.
With knowledge he rises, faith shows him reason and rhyme.
