A letter came to me from my brother and my father.

It became sweeter to me than my newly acquired and inherited wealth.

And when it reached me, it became a dispeller of sorrow,

like a beloved's reunion with a distant beloved.

I turn it over at one time, and fold it at another,

and unfold it again amid those scenes.

So I became filled with intense longing, as though I were

one distraught with longing, grieved by memories of familiar haunts.

O you, unrivaled in your abandonment and coldness,

I am stricken with longing; be gentle with one so stricken.

And I bear such agonizing longing that it has banished

my eyelids' slumber from the comfort of beds.

And even with a thousand written lines, our hearts would not be consoled

by them; lines on paper do not console us.

And even if reunion required crossing desert wastes,

we would cross the harsh wastes with tireless effort.
