Your letter reached us and gladdened us

with great joy that heals the heart of sickness.

You told us that we had left our homes

and our companions, our kin and blood relations.

So do not suppose we have forgotten our home grounds,

    nor the home of loved ones, maternal and paternal uncles;

nor have we betrayed our neighbors' affection in al-Hub

through our separation from them for a time, without wrongdoing.

We left al-Hub, which is our home,

seeking God's provision without any sin.

Yet we are the children, and al-Hub is our mother,

and men's offspring cannot flourish without a mother.

But we went out seeking sustenance wherever

it may be, from broad land and from the sea.

And we are well, in joy and blessing,

and our rivers flow, and our livelihoods grow.

    For we have made al-Hub the foundation of our wealth;

    thus capital protects against loss.

We shall journey across the horizons, east and west,

and cross mountains and deserts of our own free will,

seeking the Creator's pleasure in earning for our dependents.

And every person must seek their allotted share.

We must seek sustenance from every quarter,

and accept whatever judgment God decrees.

Do not suppose provision has eluded you while you sit at ease,

without earnest, resolute effort on your part.

We settled in Kursha, a town of honor and wealth,

and its people are people of courage and resolve.

Those are a people who have obeyed their imam,

and they are nobles who have shunned injustice and oppression.

They are devoted to all the imams,

as were their forefathers before them, in war and peace.

    Let al-Hub, al-Rustaq, al-Jaw, and al-ʿAlu

be equal, by the Almighty's knowing decree.

And all, praise be to God, have their ranks united by

the imam of humankind, lord of Arabs and non-Arabs.

He is justice itself—Sayf, [son of?] Sultan, our sword,

a youth of Malik, scion of lofty chieftains.

May God's blessing be upon him as long as [lightning?] gleams

and thunder moans amid a downpour of autumn rain.
