You want to drink from our water,

Yet it is bitter and salty, unfit to drink.

How far-fetched that you should ride an unruly mount!

For the unruly young male camel cannot be ridden.

If you possess reason and discernment,

Or are among those who desire piety,

Then ask the Most Merciful for sustenance from His bounty,

And stop begging from people, O conceited one.

And do not be a burden on a companion,

For a burdensome person is neither loved nor befriended.

Indeed, the noble, freeborn man among our people,

Even if he died of hunger, would not beg.

This is astonishing; we see nothing like it,

And my saying is more astonishing than that.

O our people, forgive and excuse,

And pardon the offender, and do not reproach him.

And do not say that I am an aggressor,

But if I am attacked, I am not afraid.
