Peace be upon you, though separation has grown long,

and steppes and hills have come between us.

And a thousand praises after a thousand greetings,

and a written page whose seal is fragrant musk.

And praise and thanks, ever sustained,

    enduring, never fading—therein lies permanence.

And pure affection from us, to gladden you,

and a remembrance of joys encompassed by weaning.

It contains lines that gleam as though they were

full moons in night's darkness, through which it is made whole.

And a page surpassing the sun in radiance and beauty,

enfolded in our covenant and pledge of protection.

We dedicate it to the virtuous people of Nafusa,

leaving out neither an elder nor a youth among them.

Our praise and peace be upon you all,

for you are, in our eyes, noble benefactors.

You were created among humankind as the finest community,

among the Arabs—neither Egypt nor Syria rivals you there.

We heard, and reports reached us, that you

appointed an imam—and he is truly an imam.

So support him, fear God, and listen

to him and obey, for bliss lies ahead.

And be united, all of you; do not split apart,

lest reproaches and strife arise among you.

For supporting the imam of the Muslims is a duty,

and disobeying him, while he is obedient, is forbidden.

Had we been nearby, we would have spared no effort,

but home and dwelling lie far apart.

And when we heard that you had appointed

an imam, we rejoiced—and joy was inevitable.

Congratulations to you, O people of Djerba, for you

are upholders of the faith of the God of all worlds.

And indeed, in war you possess might and strength,

and fierce striking power and ardor within you.

Your defiance of oppressors, and of anyone bearing

grudges of hatred, is a slender spear and a keen sword.

And stand with God, the Mighty; He will stand with you,

and do not turn aside, for sins are grave.

O sons of Mus'ab, you possess knowledge and guidance,

and your forefathers were noble among those of old.

And brandish a sword and a slender spear against your enemies,

and let no base or ignoble men be at your gathering.

And do not lose courage: bliss lies before you,

even if no elder or youth among you survives.

For those who befriend you, you are life and solace,

and to those who oppose you, a bone in the throat and death.

And you stand upon the manifest truth, while your opponents

stand upon falsehood propped up by the rabble.

For the God of the Throne is with the pious,

and with whoever is never overtaken by weariness.

And you have nothing to fear from Umayr and Amir:

when you act justly among humankind, they sleep.

And give the orphans and the needy their due,

for God's poor are not to be wronged.

And never grieve over what sustains you,

nor rejoice in what comes, for it is mere debris.
