ثنتانِtwo things لاdo not تنساهماforget them both واذكرهماand remember them both
ثنتانِ لا تنساهما واذكرهما
ذكرُremembrance الإلهGod وهازِمُand the destroyer اللذاتِof pleasures
ذكرُ الإله وهازِمُ اللذاتِ
Two things—do not forget them; remember them:
Two things never forget and always remember
Remembrance of God, and the destroyer of pleasures.
The remembrance of God and the defeater of desires
واثنانand two things لاdo not تذكرهماmention them both واعرفهماand know them both
واثنان لا تذكرهما واعرفهما
سوءُharm المسىءthe wrongdoer وفَعْلَهُand his doing الحسناتِgood deeds
سوءُ المسىء وفَعْلَهُ الحسناتِ
And two things—do not mention them, but know them:
And two things never mention and always know
The wrongdoer’s harm, and his doing of good deeds.
The evildoer and his good deeds
أجمعُI gather أموالاwealth وأشَقىand I suffer بجمعهاin gathering it
أجمعُ أموالا وأشَقى بجمعها
وأنسجand I weave آمالاhopes بطولof the length of حياتيmy life
وأنسج آمالا بطول حياتي
I gather wealth and suffer in gathering it,
I gather wealth and become miserable by gathering it
And I weave hopes of a long life.
And weave hopes by elongating my life
وأمسكهاand I hold on to it حيّاًwhile alive وأعلمand I know أنهماthat both of them
وأمسكها حيّاً وأعلم أنهما
سيأكلهاhe will eat it up عفْواًwithout effort حليلُthe husband of بَناتيmy daughters
سيأكلها عفْواً حليلُ بَناتي
And I hold on to it while alive, knowing that both
And I hold on to it alive and I know that both
Will be eaten up effortlessly by my daughters’ husband.
Will devour it easily, the husband of my daughters
