My bell rebelled: this is the adulterous mountain.

And this is the stone-thrower, with mortal breath.

So do not knock at his window, for he is a candle

That darkness hides from your nearby star.

But light a step on his path,

For free light is a human being's step.

For this is a fence that was not a bird's shadow,

But the shadow of a jailer's rock.

He is the wasteland, giving no water—yet his buckets hold so many

Stars of pools from the mountain pelted with stones.

My bell's clapper, a flower may gladden the clay,

Breathing fragrance in it, or the builder may gladden the ruins.

And only through warming at its roots does fire

Live; so be the watchful, tender one warming beside it.

And this is earth where his fire still remains,

Even if its guilty quencher drove the wind away from it.

So assemble from the firewood a statue of a forest,

And summon the far-off for him, and summon the near for him.

For he was life's harbor, its quay:

A farewell to colors, a meeting with colors.

And when the night lights all its stars,

And a deluge's cry rises from the waves,

Pour over him the fire that was not poured over him,

Even if two eyes poured it into him before you.

And summon for him the child who is still his,

To burn life's dreams with branches.

And tell him, as the clouds plunge with his embers

And paint panels with a captain's brush:

A greeting from one who shelters the child from his mother's breast,

A greeting from a drowned man who appears on no shore.
