ونناديand we cry out ياoh ليتif only كانواthey were وكنّاand we were
We wish, and in wishing lies misery;
And cry, 'Oh, if only they were ... and we were ...!'
ونصليand we pray فيin سرّناour privacy للأمانيto wishes
والأمانيand wishes فيin الجهرthe open يَضحكنthey laugh منّاat us
And in secret we pray to wishes,
And wishes laugh at us openly.
غيرyet أنيthat I، وإنeven though كرهتI hate التمنّيwishing،
أتمنىI wish لوif only كنتُI were لاnot أتمنّىI wish
Yet I, though I hate wishing,
Wish that I did not wish.

دهرٍtime يَحثّناit urges us للمسيرِto move onward
We wish, and wishing is nothing but a spur
Of time, urging us onward.

For as a child I used to wish I were
An adult, with an adult's qualities.
وكبيراًand as an adult، لوif only عُدتُI became again طفلاًa child صغيراًlittle
واستردّتand regained نفسيmy soul نعيمَthe bliss of الصغيرِa child
And grown, I wished to be a little child again,
And for my soul to regain a child's bliss;

وأسيرَand a captive of الغرامlove، لوif only كنتُI were حرّاًfree
And free of love, I wished to languish with love;
And love's captive, I wished that I were free;

وسَكوتاًand silent، لوif only كنتI were أنطقI utter دُرّاًpearls
And eloquent, I wished to be tongue-tied and silent;
And silent, I wished to utter pearls;

لوif only عرفتُI knew المكنونthe hidden سرّاًone secret فسرّاthen another secret
And wise, I wished I were naïve; and naïve,
I wished to know the hidden, secret after secret.

And alone, I wished for people around me;
And surrounded by people, I wished I were alone;

And a stranger, I wished I were among my kin;
And near, I wished my absence were long or lasting;

And glorious, I wished my glory were not mine;

And poor, I wished I had a sea of wealth;
And rich, I wished I had twice my wealth.

قائلاًsaying إنif بلغتهاI reach it قرّwill rest باليmy mind
For I have aspired to many a state,
Saying, 'If I reach it, my mind will rest.'
وأرانيand I see myself، ماnot زلتُI have ceased عبدَa slave to الأمانيwishes
أتمنّىI wish لوif only كنتI were فيin غيرother than حاليmy state
And I find myself still a slave to wishes,
Wishing I were in a state other than my own.
كلناall of us نزرعwe sow الأمانيwishes ولاand not نحصدُwe reap
بعدafter العناءthe toil غيرَexcept الأمانيwishes
We all sow wishes, and reap nothing
After the toil but wishes.
فالأمانيfor wishes حبلٌa rope نسيرُwe walk عليهupon it

For wishes are a rope we walk upon
Above the sea of existence, like an acrobat.
والأمانيand wishes يقرضنthey gnaw حبلَthe rope of الأمانيwishes
كالثوانيlike seconds يقرضنthey gnaw حبلَthe rope of الثوانيseconds
And wishes gnaw at the rope of wishes,
As seconds gnaw at the rope of seconds.

وأناديand I cry out ياoh ليتنيif only I ولوand if انيthat I
I wish, still ignorant of myself,
And cry, 'Oh, if only I ... and if only I ...!'

والأمانيand wishes فيin الجهرthe open يضحكنthey laugh منّيat me
And pray within myself to wishes,
And wishes laugh at me openly.

Yet surely I shall reach a day
When I become free, devoid of wishing.
