You creep as frailty creeps through my mortal body,

And I run swiftly after my bier and my shrouds.

So I pass through my life, running and stumbling

Over the ruins of my hopes and the specters of my sorrows.

And I build palaces from dust, and complain

When the hand of time toys with my edifice.

For every day I have a new life,

And every day death's stupor envelops me.

And were it not for the mist of doubt, O worm of the soil,

I would find my faith in your creeping.

Then I would leave my thoughts to proclaim their vanity,

And leave my sorrows to shroud my sorrows.

And crawl through my life like you, unaware

Of the causes of my passion or the impulses behind my feelings,

And surrendering in every affair and circumstance

To my Lord's wisdom, not to human judgments.

For behold, you are blind, guided by one who sees,

And I walk, sighted, along the paths of the blind.

For you the earth is a cradle and the sky a canopy,

And for me, my narrow thinking makes them two prisons.

If they are too narrow for me, they are not too narrow for my needs,

But for my ignorance and my claim to knowledge.

For within me are two opposites: a submissive heart,

And a stubborn mind that has worn me out with questioning.

It imagined that the universe is a mystery, and that it

Could be grasped through inquiry or laid bare by proof.

So it set off roaming the earth, the air, and the sky,

Asking about what is distant and searching for what is near.

And before that I was a complete poem,

So it shattered the meanings and meters within me.

And you, whose worth everyone belittles,

And whom some deem an added imperfection,

You creep freely in life's embrace,

And no worry over the secrets of worlds wears you down.

So you do not ask the earth who stretched out its length,

Nor the sun who set its heart ablaze with fires,

Nor the wind about its purpose in blowing,

Nor the red rose about its deep-crimson hue.

And in life's eyes you are not ugly,

Nor lower in worth than vultures and eagles.

For raw gold is no dearer to her than her dust,

Nor are diamonds more splendid than stones of flint.

Has she ever exchanged a raven for a nightingale?

And has she neglected worms to amuse herself with gazelles?

And has she made a sun rise to burn the boxthorn,

And fill the earth's surface with myrtle and moringa?

By your life, O my sister, our life has no

Ranks of worth or differences in price.

Her manifestations in the universe appear to an observer

In many forms and numerous colors,

And her essence has remained one since the beginning,

Whether she manifests in meteors or manifests in worms.

And he who seeks her secrets, though he is her revelation,

Is but one who buys a thirsty man's burning thirst with water.
