    Candles

    burn without desire,

and begin their Mass in reverence.

    A stillness deeper than death

draws a line of tears on the forehead of bombardment.

    Hymns of a soft voice

soften the impact of an explosion here

    and a rending there,

and erase the face of doom,

and spread above the heads—the children's heads—

a canopy of safety: an angel's two wings.

    Candles grow more ablaze,

warming, in their light, the loneliness of night, artillery, and aircraft.

Then the face of Jesus appears,

distributing loaves of steadfastness to the weary.

    He says:

Such is the trial of prophets,

and the patience of the noble with ignorance and the ignorant.

They pour their souls into the years' ingratitude,

and the sun steals radiance from them,

so their lifetimes shine with brilliance.

A brilliance like the eye of certainty

    that humbles the armored invasion,

and leaves its imprint upon the silence of the impregnable court,

and writes upon the ruin of politics a lesson in the infant's struggle,

and hangs every intention on a long line of bleeding,

    and preserves every shard:

    why they shattered,

    and where they shattered—

was it in a child's heart,

was it in an old man's head,

was it in an olive branch that was a dream for two birds,

was it in the earth's liver,

or did they settle in the ribs of houses?

    The candles' blaze grows,

    and the face of Jesus

    gathers the tents' steadfastness,

and tears distill the tents from him.

You see terror has bowed its head within them,

and its tales have come to nothing.

Jesus cries out at every machine gun weaned from the forbidden,

that poured forbidden death upon the people:

    The children of the camp

    have believed in cloud-time,

    and so became clouds.

When the calamities of the chairs compelled them,

and they passed through the age of humiliation,

    they passed with dignity.

And if government authorities addressed them, they said, 'Peace.'

Their peace is a horizon in their eyes.

Peace enfolds it, however they agree.

They slept, their toys canopies for them

above them, while the sky burned.

And politics does not have in mind what

the child has in mind as he suffocates

on the gas of their opinions; nor have

the thunderbolts of war known those struck by them.

And beside him, his mother bids him farewell,

and that last remnant of life holds back the tears.

God's ears of grain in a hand that disbelieved,

and in that hand, death is a reckless sickle.

A voice emerges from the rubble without a voice,

and the cough of an aircraft roaming over the Strip like a prostitute who found no (lawful) livelihood that day,

and the people pass from death to death.

A martyred voice, bearing Karbala's features,

cries out at death, the boy:

Have you not had enough of your play?!

The city's face is lost in the throng of blood and smoke

and the adolescent antics of aircraft.

The ambulance siren is a ceaseless death announcement,

    and Gaza's children

are the people's prophets amid time's unbelief.

The voice rises toward God's door,

calling out in the alleys and houses:

O you, alone in your patience,

    while silence inhabits the universe,

and your blood is a tongue in the mouth of its silence.

    The month is Muharram,

and al-Taff begins anew in the Strip,

    without interruption.

Patience in the face of wasted tears,

patience in the face of tamed and molded hatred,

    and the hyenas' invasions,

patience in the face of conflict's cowardice,

patience in the face of the laughter of paternal and maternal uncles,

and the slogans that are a mask,

patience in the face of the lies of the ship and the sail,

patience in the face of silent time,

patience, children of the olive trees,

amid a foolish death that will not accept

that in the olive trees is a pulse that does not die.
