    A departure has passed.

    And a departure has come.

    And a departure will come.

And I am still the one ... who makes a tryst with a shadow.

And watches how sunset rises toward the soul, slowly.

And asks how he will become a child again,

To wipe, with innocent laughter, a face

And a heart grown middle-aged ... from the pain of love.

    A departure has passed.

    And a departure will come.

And you are as you are,

    A legend...

That will sketch its roles in the gaps of my silence.

And I practiced every ritual to escape this forest of sand,

And pull my feet free of a foolish age,

    To fall between your lips—yours.

    I hover over you.

And between me and you, the sword of distances gleams like your radiance, O my silver,

And O moon that does not come.

I learned how madness can be an asset,

And how to piece my face together alone,

And carry the address of your eyes within me as mail,

And flee from you to you.

So my soul grows green upon my wrists as roses,

And Ashwaq sketches her image in my blood.

    These are Baghdad's charms,

And her laughter is a Kazimi dagger,

And two breasts—a capital for rhymes—

Calling to my burning: "Come and try my Zamzam here."

So I crucify myself upon my notebook,

To see how you look out from it upon me,

An angel and the sun's gift to me.

And the Tigris returned and soaked me...

So my heart turned dewy again.

And I did not come to my senses for a moment,

For love touched me, a boy, upon your lips.

And I did not resist the blazing kisses whenever they called me.

    A departure has come.

    And a departure will come.

And here I am, a gull above the bell of my time.

And you, despite all this departure,

And all that has come or will come,

    Will remain, Ashwaq,

A song for the long evening,

    And an hour of love

    Whose title was you.
