    I rose in the morning,

and I marvel at my body:

everything within it trembled this morning.

For within me is a palm tree.

Whenever death storms among people, it storms within it,

    and it shakes.

I too shake at the sound of a bomb

    as it reaps,

reaps along the road whatever can be reaped.

I see it scattering inside me legs and heads,

and a child's watch in which time has frozen,

and part of a girl's shirt, and a hand,

    and also eyes half-open,

    where bewilderment stumbled halfway,

    and throats gorged with screaming,

as death has snatched people away from around them.

    So I said:

    Why do the dead here

    depart

    with their eyes half-open

    and their souls half-closed?

    Do they object to death,

    or approach it while awake?

And why does the road to Najaf nest in every corner of the road?

    Do you not hear?

For the mourners' voice has grown practiced in death until it turned professional.

    Here is a child's grave.

Here is an old man's grave.

Here is a virgin's grave; her veil was shyness

at passing through the midst of the crowd.

    And she turned aside alone,

so death wooed her at the bend.

And you hear a mother's gasp,

    choking on her son's lifetime...

For his wedding procession was in the evening,

but in the morning he was eclipsed.

Your face shattered between one grave and another.

When were you, my homeland, made of earthenware?

    So, O you dead—a question:

After death, is there a road to a new death,

and a new path to the land of Najaf?

    And O you dead—a question:

Is the shape of devils during life

like the shape of devils after death?

For I heard that the Messenger entrenched himself against Quraysh's cunning,

and a sword blade scattered their factions, steeped in death until it aged.

Thus Iblis is mustered in the form of a party,

and here we are without a messenger.

So where can we obtain Ali's sword,

and how shall we turn all the country's borders into a trench?

For this reason we washed the sins of the chairs in seventy seas,

and no one seated upon them has become clean.

    So, O you dead:

    do you know

that the plows have grown old in the land of governments,

searching for any seed of honor?

And you know that we are a delectable embrace,

and a wedding night lasting centuries.

That is why the bullets' saliva flows over us.

    And O you dead—a question:

If a bullet hole is the martyr's road to God,

how, I wonder, can all the palms pass through a hole?

And every palm in my country is a martyr.

I see it—God shrouds its frond-face with the river.

    And O you dead—a question:

would you, I wonder, return to us

    if ever here

    a ruler—a ruler—

    rose against himself and confessed?

    And O you dead:

I shall close the record of my questions with one last question:

    why do you die?

    And I fall silent

until I sense the voice of the place

and silently touch the echo's face,

as though I see everything as a tongue,

and every tongue says that we die...

so that from the womb of the cause springs a pain in the shape of a rifle,

a pain that dismantles talismans of arrogance with bullets,

a pain of a speaking kind that has come to cross out an alphabet,

and stretches out a feast-day for orphans from widowed months,

a pain shaped like dawn going out in a girl's eyes,

a pain that becomes the identity of one deprived of identity's homeland.

So, O you martyrs—it is forbidden,

    forbidden to you,

to approach heaven's gate all at once.

For one of you at heaven's gate is a multitude,

and two of you at its gate are the height of crowding.

And O you martyrs, you doves,

I charge you with a trust from my eyes...

if you see a martyr on whose chest the kisses of shrapnel sleep—

for the night of the massacre has wearied

    a handsome martyr called Iraq—

    then offer him peace,

for I have recited Al-Fatiha over his grave.
