The hand of Time embroidered my head with gray—alas—
Time’s hand embroidered my head with gray hair, in sorrow,
in pitch-blackness brocaded with the lamp’s radiance.
in a deep gloom embroidered with the lamp’s radiance.

Then gray crept through it as fire creeps through coal,
Then it crept through it like fire creeping through coal,
banishing its darkness with a hue itself unbanished.
dispelling its darkness with a hue that cannot be dispelled.

As though, with my gray hair, when he inscribed it,

it were a page written by an illiterate hand.
