كأَنَّas though زَمانيmy time فَوقَupon ساقىmy leg قابِضٌgripping
ليقصرَso that … falls short باعيmy reach عَنof عُلاthe heights كُلِّevery مَطلَبِaim
As though my time had clamped its grip upon my leg,
So that my reach falls short of the heights of every aim.
فمنso from زُبَرِmasses الأَقيادِthe fetters مَدٌّa reaching out بِساعِدٍwith a forearm
وَمِنand from حلقاتrings الكبلِthe shackle شَدٌّa tight grip بمخلبwith a claw
So from the masses of fetters comes an arm’s reach,
And from the shackle’s rings, a claw’s tight grip.
أَمرُّI pass عَلىover الأَفواهِthe mouths ذكراًin mention وَلاand not أُرىI am seen
كأَنّيas though I فيهاin them ذكرُa mention عنقاءَʿAnqāʾ (a mythical bird) مُغربMughrib (far-flying)
I pass from mouth to mouth in mention, yet am not seen,
As though, on those lips, I were a mention of the ʿAnqāʾ Mughrib.
