أَقولُI say وَدَمعيand my tears يستهلُّgushes forth وَيسفحُand streams down
وَقَدand indeed هاجَhas stirred فيin الصَدرthe breast الغَليلburning longing المبرحagonizing
I say, while my tears gush forth and stream down,
I speak, and my tears flow and pour forth,
And agonizing yearning has stirred in my breast:
As sorrow rages in my heart, unrestrained,
دَعونيleave me منfrom الصبرpatience الجَميلbeautiful فَإِنَّنيfor indeed I
رأَيتI have seen جَميلَbeautiful الصَبرpatience فيin الحبlove يَقبحturn ugly
'Spare me beautiful patience, for I
Spare me from graceful patience, for I have seen
Have seen beautiful patience turn ugly in love.'
That patience in love appears uncomely.
لَقَدindeed هَيّجstirred up الأَضحىthe Feast of Sacrifice لِنَفسيfor my soul جوىburning anguish أَسىgrief
كريهُdreadful المَناياdeaths منهthan it للنفسfor the soul أَروحmore restful
The Feast of Sacrifice has indeed stirred burning grief in my soul;
Dawn has stirred in my soul a flame of sorrow -
Even dreadful death brings the soul more ease than this.
A misery that makes the soul recoil and flee.
كأَنَّas though بِعَينيin my eye حَلقَthe throat of كلevery ذَبيحَةٍsacrificial animal
بهduring it وَبِصَدريand in my breast قَلبهاits heart حينwhen تَذبحُit is slaughtered
As though my eye held the throat of every sacrificial beast
As if before my eyes, every slain creature
At that feast, and my breast its heart as it is slaughtered.
Was slaughtered, its heart within my own breast butchered.
فَيالَيتَso, oh, if only شعريmy knowledge هَلwhether لمولايfor my lord عَطفةa touch of tenderness
يداويhe heals بهاwith it منيof mine فؤادٌa heart مُجرَّحwounded
Oh, if only I knew: has my lord a touch of tenderness
Would that I knew - does my Master have pity
With which to heal a wounded heart of mine,
To heal with it a heart that's wounded and torn?
يحنُّyearns إِلىfor البدرthe full moon الَّذيwho فَوقَupon خَدِّهhis cheek
مَكانin place of سوادِdark marking البدرthe full moon وَردٌa rose مفتَّحin bloom
That yearns for the moon upon whose cheek
Yearning for the full moon whose cheek
A rose blooms in place of the moon's dark mark?
Bears a rosy spot where the moon is flawed and marred.
تقنَّعveiled itself بَدرُfull moon التمِّfullness عندat طلوعِهits rising
مَخافةَfor fear أَنthat يَسريhe travels by night إِلَيهِto it فَيُفضَحand thus be shamed
The full moon veiled itself as it rose,
The imperfect moon hides its face at dawn
For fear he might reach it by night and it be put to shame.
Fearing the flaw will be exposed and seen.
فَقُلتُso I said لهto it ياO بَدرُfull moon أَسفِرunveil yourself فَقدfor indeed عداhas assailed
عليهupon him رَقيبُa watchman للعداfor the foes لَيسَdoes not يبرحleave
So I said to it, 'O moon, unveil yourself, for he is beset
I said: "O moon, shine forth, for the watchful critic
By a watchman serving his foes, who never leaves.'
Who would blame such a flaw is nowhere near!"
لعمريby my life لذاكَindeed that البَدرُthe full moon أَجمَلُmore beautiful منظَراًin appearance
وَأَحسَنُand lovelier منthan بدرfull moon التَمامfullness وَأَملحand more charming
By my life, that moon is more beautiful to behold,
By my life! That moon is lovelier to behold
And lovelier than the full moon, and more charming.
And fairer than the perfect moon could ever be.
