O you who dive into the depths of the horizon

In search of pearls of great worth,

What crown are you studding with jewels—and how long

Will you wander in the darkness of the soul?

You drink the ether from cups of light,

And find sweet the bitter sap of hopes.

You draw tears from the eyes of misery,

As though tears were wine in jars.

So you rise, rebellious and drunk,

    Warning existence of the flood.

You are like fires that destroy and perish,

Then live again with a thousand thousand tongues.

Fools think they have extinguished them,

Yet those fires are in their sleeves and cuffs.

You burn humankind for rebirth and purification,

Like the phoenix through the ages.

You are a flame that night travelers value

Seconds after it has gone out.

You enter the world like a fleeting apparition,

Vanishing like a hurried man's borrowed flame.

You are the lamps that adorned Time's temple,

So the inner eyes of the blind shone.

If you appear like light in the cave at night,

They frighten us with jinn and ghouls.

Or come into view like a comet on the horizon,

They reply: “The Day of Resurrection is near.”

You have trodden the Way of the Cross, though you walked

A path other than the priests'.

Your whole life is like Jesus' night,

In despondency amid the garden's solitude.

Or like Moses, between Pharaoh and the wilderness,

    Suffering at his people's hands what he suffers;

Or like Taha, when he feared Quraysh's might,

So he was afflicted by the rabble and the boys.

You are the pure, free from every defilement,

And the undefiled, free of the taint of idols.

And if you ever pass through mire,

It is to cleanse it of filth.
