    كمنَ الرّدى في حدِه للجاني

    God's hand forged you as a sword of safety;

Death lay in wait along its edge for the wrongdoer.

Justice is its hilt, and in its blade's patterned sheen

Are surahs of guidance, revealed as a spell of eloquence.

And God dictated to you, from His verses,

Shooting stars that tore apart the armor of falsehood.

Without your Book, we would have seen no miracle

In a nation whose structure was firmly knit,

That carried from its desert to distant lands

The flame of guidance and the rich cloaks of civilization.

A guide appears to me, as though his form

Were the very substance of faith made flesh.

And I see him, affirming God's oneness, angered for His sake

At a palm tree whose root bears twin trunks.

Badr did not make him vain, nor did Uhud turn

His resolves from the path of knowledge.

For he is certainty, wrestling with the world; and whoever

    Goes beyond certainty returns defeated.

And such is prophethood: wisdom and firmness,

And piety, inspiration, and overflowing tenderness.

It is that spirit which takes flesh in

Heroes for an event of mighty consequence.

It casts its armor upon heroes, then drives—

—them, and they erupt like a volcano.

For you in heaven stands a sacred dais,

Founded on God's oneness and the scales of justice.

You were no bloodthirsty killer, nor did you shed blood

Except by the authority of the Just One, the Judge.

Had you been among a people whose minds were steeped

In revelation, you would have been like the meekest of lambs.

    ومذ ارعووا عن ذلك الطغيان

    They harassed you and drove you out, so you overcame them;

And when they desisted from that tyranny,

You were generous, then pardoned their sins,

And showered them with spoils and kindness.

    من كل فاكهةٍ بها زوجان

    To God belongs your faith—a sealed garden;

Within it are two kinds of every fruit.

A faith that flowed with wisdom and renewal,

Like the sea in its wording, and the sky in its meanings.

You fashioned from it a universal unity,

In which the slave and master are equals.

O you who die with your armor held in pledge,

You have trampled the glory of ringing gold.

If people paid the prescribed alms and acted justly,

There would be no suffering pauper in the world.

    أما الهوى فكبحتَهُ بعِنان

    You eased affairs for people, and they prospered;

As for desire, you curbed it with a rein.

And you gathered companions around you, O Messenger,

In turbans more splendid than crowns.

Their clothes were coarse, but their neighborly ways were gentle

Through justice, so that foes were like brothers.

Justice suffers in palaces, while you have

Made her happy amid the Bedouins' tents.

O teacher of God's oneness, unite a nation

That religious fanaticism has torn apart.

They quarrel over heaven, while their land

Is in the grip of pioneers and time's vicissitudes.

So let the generations bow in reverence at

The mention of the purest Prophet, of Adnan's line.

And let the fanatics caw: never has

The crows' pretentious reasoning harmed the birds of paradise.
