Should I deny my eye's tears if they pour forth?

And put on my smiles, all pretense?

Yes, I am sorrowful, my beloved,

For the days of meeting passed so swiftly.

And now the hour of farewell has come,

And separation's captain has unfurled the sail.

I sought refuge in fortitude, yet I

Found patience had already fled and vanished.

I raised my arm with the despair of one defeated,

And grief deep within me weighed down my arm.

And my lips murmured, and I do not know:

Did I say, 'Until we meet again,' or 'Farewell'?

I looked at you with the gaze of one seeking refuge,

And found neither protection nor defense.

For in your eyes, sorrow was a sword,

Threatening me and filling me with dread.

And tears were polishing it, so I found

Its gleam in the sea of your eyes.

And I did not speak, for over my mouth lay mountains

Of sighs that silenced it in anguish.

Does everyone bidding a dear friend farewell suffer,

And gulp down sorrow as I do?

On the bridge of parting I stood, imploring

My heart to return, but it would not obey.

And when you were gone from me, my beloved,

And left the dwellings and the lands,

I saw the night filling me with darkness,

So it left no ray to console me.

And my eyes poured out tears until

They became like a torrent, flowing and surging.

And I said in burning grief, 'May my tears never dry,

Nor ever be held back or cease,

    Until the Most Merciful reunites

Us, and we renew our bond and togetherness.'

Nor do I deny my tears, dear friend,

And I shall not place a mask over my face.

Nor am I the first of lovers, that I should

Try deceitfully to hide my sighs.

I have known love as a path to noble heights,

And never accepted it as humiliation or submission.

And I was never one to fear the nights,

Nor has a brave man ever yielded to them.

And I have a heart that cares nothing for my death,

Nor has death ever defeated a brave heart.

    فلمّا جاءَ زِدتُ بكَ اقتناعا

    And I was content with no crown but love;

So when it came, my faith in you grew stronger.

For you, my beloved, are the crown of my love,

And the crown of love must be cherished.

And none has known love but a noble person,

So through it he grew in loftiness and stature.

And since creation began, it has only ever been

Like sustenance: whoever scorned it went hungry.

So, O my Lord, will You prolong my life

So I may find love spread among the people?

    .........................................................

My beloved, yesterday longing was a secret; on the day of our parting, my tears revealed it.

    .........................................................

Your departure kindled fires within us,

And if you set Indian agarwood alight, it gives off fragrance,

And sends its scent into every heart,

To wrench sorrow wholly out of it.

My solace is that your voice will come,

So I will listen to it with all my heart,

And rejoice each day at a call,

If being with you is not possible.
