Bashair, my heart has called to you; answer.

And do not leave me to a dreadful silence.

I have come to see you, so say,

As you used to, "Papa, my darling, my darling."

For your voice used to ease my suffering

And touch my ailment with a physician's hand.

So how can it vanish, never to return—

The song of goldfinches and the nightingale?

    Bashair, answer, if only once,

And say, "I love you, Papa," then be gone.

For I have no objection to what

My God has willed; this absence is my lot.

All praise is Yours, O Lord, in every matter,

And indeed You know what is in hearts.

And You are the Merciful, and You are the Generous,

And You are the dispeller of the night of anguish.

You have given and lavished Your bounty upon us,

And if You take it back, there is no escape.

Every beginning has an end, and my sun,

Just before sunrise, went to its setting.

Bashair was like a jasmine blossom,

Whose fragrance wafts with the loveliest perfume.

And I would make a longing pilgrimage to her,

To rest from the grinding ravages of wars,

And in her presence forget the wounds of my heart,

And the enemies' plotting and the thorns along the paths.

Bashair was the radiance of hopes

And the pulse of songs; so, O eye, dissolve,

And bring forth tears of mourning, for I

See grief sinking its wolfish fangs.

And I feel that my sky has been invaded,

At dawn, by an army of dismal night.

And were it not for my certainty of Your justice, my Lord,

My sobbing would have shaken the lofty mountains.

I entered the house after my absence,

Yet the feeling of being a stranger never left me.

And the house said to me in anguish:

"I have known you steadfast in the face of calamities.

Why, then, do I see grief in your eyes,

Pouring the hue of pallor over your face?

Be steadfast, for Bashair is a soul

    Going to God without sins.

The gardens of eternity have rejoiced in her,

For she has no sins and no faults."

And the house said nothing but what

I feel within me like a surge of flame.

Yes, I do not deny my deep grief,

Nor does my heart's pulse conceal its pounding.

    Bashair was my little gazelle,

And this gazelle was ever leaping.

And into the depths of the swimming pool she sank,

While the watcher's eyes were unaware.

    وما الموتُ غيرَ البعيدِ القريبِ

    And Bashair was lost in an instant;

And death is but the far-off, close at hand.

    فيا قلبُ صَلِّ ويا نفسُ تُوبي

    It is my Lord's will, and I have no objection;

So, O heart, pray; and, O soul, repent.

Farewell, Bashair, O my heart's lifeblood,

For you will never return to our home.

But I will surely meet you,

In an eternal reunion on an awe-inspiring day.

I carried you on that last day, and my heart

Beat against my chest like one beset by doubt.

And when you vanished beneath the earth,

I recalled the narrowness of this vast existence.

I stood before the graves in silence,

As though I were nailed upon the cross.

I held back my tears so they would not overflow

And leave me powerless to stem their pouring flood.
