Because forgiveness is my weak point,

you still enjoy my affection and gentleness.

And you still stab me every day,

yet my sword does not parry your thrusts.

I tend my wounds with my gracious patience,

yet the heart finds no relief, nor does patience heal.

And I ask: what is the secret of this steadfastness

to my pledge of love? My bleeding explains.

merciful and forgiving, my violence would torment you.

So do not imagine that you are stronger,

and that I am patient against my will.

I am the very might of storms, so understand

why I shield you from my violence's whims.

    Because you cannot stand firm

if my tenderness and compassion leave you.

I still love you despite the faults,

and a tear from my written word bears witness to love.

I wept long in the silence of my waiting,

for you are my final victory and my death.

I love you, while despair has no end

before my footsteps and my eye's gaze.

And the land of my heart thirsts for rain,

while you are nothing but a summer cloud.

Stingy toward me, generous toward whoever

disputes with you in words of falsehood and deceit.

You remain beloved, though my blood

stains your palms, O wound in my palm.

Whatever may happen, I will not cry out in protest,

nor will I tell your sword: Enough.

and a deaf man's ear, if my description is right.

So if you wish to kill me, do it face to face,

and beware of drawing your sword behind me.

For when I die, my death will reveal

all that you used to disguise and conceal.

then how will you deny my truthfulness and refute it?

I loved you through death and resurrection—so have you

understood my [fate], my state, and my circumstances?
