من هؤلاء دوَّخوا الترابا

من هؤلاء دوَّخوا الترابا

وأشبعوا وجه الثرى عذابا

Who are these who have made the dust reel,

Who are they who have trampled the soil

And sated the face of the earth with torment?

And filled the face of earth with torment

في كل يومٍ يطرقون بابا

في كل يومٍ يطرقون بابا

ويفجأون الزمن المنسابا

Every day they knock upon a door,

Each day they knock on a door

And take flowing time by surprise,

And take the flowing time by surprise

فيمسخون الخلد والشبابا

ويشكلون سحرهُ الوثابا

ويشكلون سحرهُ الوثابا

So they disfigure eternity and youth,

They distort eternity and youth

And fetter its leaping magic.

And shape its leaping magic

سيَّان إن هُمْ نادموا الأترابا

سيَّان إن هُمْ نادموا الأترابا

أو عاشروا الوحوش والذئابا

أو عاشروا الوحوش والذئابا

It is all the same whether they drink with their peers,

Be they regretful of past companions

Or consort with wild beasts and wolves.

Or befriended beasts and wolves

سيَّان يلقون المنى قبابا

سيَّان يلقون المنى قبابا

أو يرضعون حظها يبابا

أو يرضعون حظها يبابا

It is all the same whether they find hopes as domes,

It's all the same, they meet their fate in shrouds

Or suckle the hopes' fortune as barren waste.

Or suckle its gifts like babes

صار الوجود حولهم سرابا

صار الوجود حولهم سرابا

وسحرهُ أضحى لهم عذابا

وسحرهُ أضحى لهم عذابا

Existence around them has become a mirage,

Existence around them turns into mirage

And its magic has become torment for them,

And its magic becomes torment for them

ونارهُ صُبَّت لهم شرابا

ونارهُ صُبَّت لهم شرابا

فأينما حلَّوا رأوا خرابا

فأينما حلَّوا رأوا خرابا

And its fire was poured for them as drink.

Its fire poured for them as drink

So wherever they settled, they saw ruin,

Wherever they stayed they saw ruin

وصادفوا الهموم والأوصابا

وصادفوا الهموم والأوصابا

والغمَّةَ الهوجاءَ والضبابا

والغمَّةَ الهوجاءَ والضبابا

And encountered cares and afflictions,

And met worries and tribulations

And raging anguish and fog,

And gloomy, billowing gloom and haze

ونقمةً لا تعرف المتابا

ونقمةً لا تعرف المتابا

ولا تذوق الندم الصخابا

ولا تذوق الندم الصخابا

And vengeance that knows no repentance,

And blame that knows no remorse

Nor tastes clamorous remorse.

Nor tastes regret's bitterness

وأينما طافوا رأوْا حجابا

وأينما طافوا رأوْا حجابا

وظلمةً لا ترفع النقابا

وظلمةً لا ترفع النقابا

And wherever they roamed, they saw a veil,

Wherever they roamed they saw barriers

And darkness that does not lift the veil.

And darkness that does not lift its veil

سدَّت عليهم سدلها المُرتابا

سدَّت عليهم سدلها المُرتابا

وضيعت في قلبها المآبا

وضيعت في قلبها المآبا

It shut its doubt-ridden curtain over them,

Its uncertain folds closed upon them

And lost the way back within its heart.

And its refuges were lost within it

سبحان من فرَّقهم شعابا

سبحان من فرَّقهم شعابا

وقدَّر التيهَ لهم عقابا

وقدَّر التيهَ لهم عقابا

Glory to Him who scattered them through ravines,

Glory to Him who scattered them into ravines

And ordained wandering as punishment for them.

And destined wandering as punishment for them

وياٌ لهم قد عبدوا الترابا

وياٌ لهم قد عبدوا الترابا

وألَّهوا من الحصى أربابا

وألَّهوا من الحصى أربابا

And alas for them: they have worshipped dust,

Woe to them, they worshipped the soil

And made gods of pebbles,

And deified pebbles as lords

وقدَّسوا من زيفه كتابا

وقدَّسوا من زيفه كتابا

وبعثروا صلاتهم أسرابا

وبعثروا صلاتهم أسرابا

And sanctified a book from its falsehood,

And sanctified scripture of lies from it

And scattered their prayers in flocks,

Scattering their prayers like flocks

في كل أرضٍ تنشد المحرابا

في كل أرضٍ تنشد المحرابا

وترصد الدينار أين غابا

وترصد الدينار أين غابا

In every land, seeking the prayer niche,

In every land that seeks prayer niches

And watching for the dinar wherever it has vanished,

And watches greedily where gold has gone

ولو طوت لمعته الشهابا

ولو طوت لمعته الشهابا

ودفنت في برقها السحابا

ودفنت في برقها السحابا

Even if its gleam swallowed the shooting star,

Were it to glitter with meteors

And buried the clouds within its flash.

And be buried in the clouds' lightning

الإثم من أجسادهم تحابى

الإثم من أجسادهم تحابى

وقبَّل الأبواب والأعتابا

وقبَّل الأبواب والأعتابا

Sin crept forth from their bodies,

Sin would sneak from their bodies

And kissed the doors and thresholds,

And kiss doors and thresholds

وشقَّ عن مزاره الأثوابا

وشقَّ عن مزاره الأثوابا

ومسَّهُ تيهُ الهوى فذابا

ومسَّهُ تيهُ الهوى فذابا

And tore the robes away from its shrine,

Baring robes from its shrines

And passion's bewilderment touched it, so it melted.

Lost in the madness of passion

مدَّت فلسطين لهم رحابا

مدَّت فلسطين لهم رحابا

وأفسحت لضيفهم جنابا

وأفسحت لضيفهم جنابا

Palestine spread out wide spaces for them,

Palestine offered them wide spaces

And made room at her side for their guest.

And ample room for their guest

فأترعوا السم لها والصَّابا

فأترعوا السم لها والصَّابا

وحيَّروا في أمرهم الألبابا

وحيَّروا في أمرهم الألبابا

So they poured her poison and bitter sap to the brim,

But they sucked poison and mischief for it

And left minds bewildered at their conduct.

Perplexing minds with their plight

أمضت إليهم سيفها الغلاّبا

أمضت إليهم سيفها الغلاّبا

فساقهم في نارها أحطابا

فساقهم في نارها أحطابا

She sent her all-conquering sword against them,

It sent against them its conquering sword

So it drove them into her fire as firewood.

So it fuels them in its blazing fire

سيصبح التيه لهم ركابا

سيصبح التيه لهم ركابا

ويتركون الله والأعرابا

ويتركون الله والأعرابا

Wandering will become their mount,

Bewilderment will be their steed

And they will leave God and the Bedouins behind.
