A flute of the jinn lies lost in the universe's wilderness.

The songs fell stricken after it vanished.

Shrouded in the pockets of the unseen, driven ever deeper

Into an eternity of death's shadows by immortality.

    تضج من وحشةٍ فيها الجلاميد

    The spirits of the wilderness asked after it, and went on;

The boulders within it clamor with loneliness.

And the star lowered bewildered eyelids,

Made sore by sleeplessness born of parting's torment.

Battered by time's dust, worn out by

Long gazing and deep scrutiny—and it benefits [wording unclear].

They watched the world's procession, and it troubled them:

Did some support paralyze their step amid the motes?

So their lashes quivered madly in the darkness,

As though a piece of wood had sunk into their dark pupil.

And the breezes' journey doubled their affliction,

Roaming far, their lot in travel ill-fated.

Bewildered, they pass through time, never whispering to it

Without a vexation from its mouth searing them.

    ترنُّ في جرسِه الساري الأغاريدُ

    They say: “This is melody's roar, raging fiercely;

Songs ring within its spreading resonance.

And where, O blossom, is the flute, once inspired

By that whose whispered refrain intoxicated the universe?

    فأين من سحرهِ القيثارُ والعودُ

    This song the mouth of the world repeats;

What are the lyre and lute beside its enchantment?”

Then the blossom flung off maddened bud-sheaths,

And the tender shoots snapped themselves away from it.

    وغاب من خدّه سحرٌ وتوريدُ

    And a fragrance that perfumed it dissolved in its cradle;

And charm and rosy color vanished from its cheek.

And it trembled like a sighing devotee, swayed

In remembrance's fervor by faith and the affirmation of God's oneness.

And it said: “How many generations have passed by,

While its melody sings sweetly in the mouth of the generations!

Yet, when questioned, they fell silent like me,

And inarticulacy and stupefaction thwarted their explanation.”

And suddenly, a raging tempest: struck senseless

By its terror were the jinn, the strongholds, and the deserts.

As though it were the fates' frenzy; since it raged,

No being in the earth's ravines could bear it.

From the meadow of Abqar it had blown forth, thundering,

As though it were a threat from the defiant jinn.

In its heart is a melody; if it softens, you would think it

A sigh repeated in the night by one stricken.

And if it grows harsh, people's hearts quake,

And the earth is anguished, the universe trembling.

It cast its wisdom upon mad time,

So elder and newborn alike were guided by it.

And it enraptured the world's ear with its melody,

As though David had blown into the flute.

It imparts its fierce ardor to the fearful, timid one,

Who becomes a valiant champion in the fray.

A tawny wine that never came near a cup, nor was drunk,

Nor did a grape-cluster bear it in the vineyard.

Its drinking companion remained bewildered, distressed by

Ignorance of its harvest grounds and being driven astray.

Until he reached Aleppo the Gray, intoxicated,

His body worn down by the exhaustion of travel.

Then the enchantment he saw in its scene awed him:

The wine was visions; the mind, a wine jar.

And al-Mutanabbi's lute was playing, lilting,

Suspended, bound fast to the star's supporting pillars.

It unleashes melody; whenever its singing voice resounds,

The proud nobles fall on their faces before its spell.

Then his lips murmured for a moment, and he moved on,

His heart smitten by the melody's drunken raptures.

    فكل لحن ٍ شدا من نايهِ عيدُ

    He says: “Do not convene a festival in his memory;

For every melody sung from his flute is a festival.”
