My pipe—how often she sang out in the fields,

Till, in my joy, I almost flew with her!

The kid in my pasture dances with her,

And the bees on my hillock answer her.

And the light, in rapture at her melody,

Has leaned in its youthful freshness to play with her.

It gazed at her from the eyelids of an iris,

And almost addressed her in a drunken spell.

I blew into her reed flute, and it enraptured me,

And in my solitude it began to caress her.

It woos the soul with its melodies,

With a flutter at midmorning that springs toward her.

Drunk on the joy of spring, without

Wine whose pouring streams were made to ripple within it.

It yearns for its cradle in a swaying maiden

Of its tender clover, whom it watches:

A young girl whose gauzy robes were striped,

And whose tresses were embroidered with radiance.

I sang in her shade—did she hear

My melody, her breastbones already set trembling?

Or did a breeze visit her in her bed,

And, enchanted, begin to tug at her?
