اَخذتُ بِعَينِ المالِ حَتّى نَهِكتُهُ

وَبالَدَّينِ حَتّى ما أَكادُ أُدانُ

I drew on my ready cash until I exhausted it,

I grasped money with my eyes until I exhausted it

and on credit until I could scarcely obtain a loan;

And debts until I can hardly pay them off

وَحَتّى سَأَلتُ القَرضَ عِندَ ذَوي الغِنى

وَحَتّى سَأَلتُ القَرضَ عِندَ ذَوي الغِنى

وَرَدَّ فُلانٌ حاجَتي وَفُلانُ

وَرَدَّ فُلانٌ حاجَتي وَفُلانُ

and even asked the wealthy for a loan,

Until I asked for loans from the wealthy

and so-and-so refused my request, and so-and-so.

And so-and-so turned down my need, and so-and-so did
