Ah, who will carry a message from me
To ʿUbayd Allāh, since he hastened his messages?
تَعاقَلَassumed mutual blood-money obligations دونَناexcluding us أَبناءُthe sons of ثَورٍThawr
وَنَحنُwhile we الأَكثَرونَare the greater حَصىin numbers وَمالاand in wealth
The sons of Thawr have made a blood-money pact without us,
Though we are greater in numbers and wealth.

وَراءَbehind الماسِحينَthose who stroke لَكَfor you السِبالاthe whiskers
When they assemble, you attend, coming as a follower,
Behind those who stroke your whiskers.
فَلاso not تُعطىyou are given عَصاthe staff of الخَطباءِthe orators فيهِمamong them

وَقَدand indeed نَكفيwe suffice for المقادَةَleadership وَالمَقالاand oratory
So you are not given the orators' staff among them,
Yet we suffice for leadership and oratory.
فَاِنَكُمfor you all indeed وَتَركَand forsaking بَنيthe sons of أَبِيكُمyour father
وَأُسرَتَكُمُand your clan تَجُرُّونَyou drag الحِبالاthe ropes
For you, in forsaking your father's sons
And your clan, while you drag the ropes,
وَودُّكُمُand your love for العِدىenemies مِمَّنfrom among those سِواكُمother than yourselves
لكالحَيرانِsurely like the bewildered man يَتَّبِعُhe follows الظَلالاthe shadows
And in your love for enemies outside your people,
Are surely like a bewildered man chasing shadows.
فَاِنّاfor we indeed بِالسُروجِat the saddles وَجانِبَيهاand at their two sides
نَشُكُّwe pierce خِلالَهاthrough their midst حَلَقاًrings of mail حِلالاlawful prey
For amid the saddles and on either side of them,
We pierce through rings of mail, lawful prey.
نَحُفُّwe gather around المُترَعاتِthe brimming bowls إِذاwhen شَتَوناwe spend winter
إِذاwhen النَكباءُthe crosswind عاقَبَتِalternates with الشَمالاthe north wind
We gather round brimming bowls in winter,
When the crosswind alternates with the north wind.
نُدِرُّwe make yield milk الحَربَwar ماas long as دَرَّتshe yields milk عَصُوباyielding only when bound
وَنَحلُبُهاand we milk her وَنَمريهاand we stroke her udder عِلالاin repeated milkings
We keep war yielding milk, though she yields only when bound,
And milk her and stroke her udder, again and again.
