I thought I recognized a clearly visible campsite at al-Muʿabbir;
I imagined a clear quarter by the crossing,
its two cold winds would do nothing today but take turns.
Yet its two hills refused today to do anything but shift.
أَرَبَّتlingered عَلَيهِover it رادَةٌa roaming wind حَضرَمِيَّةٌHadrami

A roaming Hadrami wind lingered over it,
A dark, hazel-colored cloud settled upon it,
and a thundering cloud, as though lamps were within it.
And flickering as if it contained lanterns.
إِذاwhen هِيَshe حَلَّتsettled كَربَلاءَKarbala فَلَعلاthen Laʿlā
فَجَوزَthen the heart of العُذَيبِal-ʿUdhayb دونَهاon this side of her فَالنَوابِحاthen al-Nawābiḥ
When she has settled at Karbala, then Laʿlā,
When it descended upon Karbala, it likely
then the heart of al-ʿUdhayb, on this side of her, then al-Nawābiḥ,
Allowed the fresh jujube trees passage beneath it, yet not the wailers,
وَبانَتand diverged نَواهاher course مِنfrom نَواكَyour course وَطاوَعَتand heeded

and her course has diverged from yours, and she has heeded,
And its intention became evident from your intention, and it consented
along with the haters, the gloating, spiteful women,
To the slanderers, the gloating backbiters, and the impudent.
فَقولاthen say, you two لِلَيلىto Layla هَلwhether تُعَوِّضُshe compensates نادِماًa remorseful man
لَهُfor him رَجعَةٌa right of return قالَhe pronounced الطَلاقَdivorce مُمازِحاin jest
then ask Layla, you two, whether she will recompense a remorseful man
So say to Layla, “Will you compensate a regretful man
who has a right of return and pronounced divorce in jest.
Who jokingly uttered divorce, yet has an opportunity to return?”
فَاِنand if هِيَshe قالَتsaid لاno فَقولاthen say, you two لَهاto her بَلىyes indeed

And if she says, “No,” then tell her, you two: “Yes indeed!
If she says “No,” then say to her, “Yes,
Do you not fear the coursing slaughterers?”
Do you not fear the slaughtering slave girls?”
