خِلافَin the absence of مُوَلاَّهاtheir guardian لهنّfor them حميمُa close companion
To water downy chicks in the wilderness, who had
To quench thirst with a waterskin has never
No close companion in their guardian's absence;
Been against their Master, it is intimate to them

Left behind on the barren land—and whoever leaves
You see them in the barren land, and whoever calls
The young in such a dwelling is blameworthy.
His home their first stop, he is kind
إذاwhen استقبلْتهاfaced her الريحُthe wind طَمَّتْshe flew onward رفيقةًgentle

When the wind meets her head-on, she flies gently onward,
When the wind meets them, it knocks down a friend
While they crouch in a hollow like balls.
And they coo with passion like turtle doves
يُراطِنَّthey chatter to وَقْصاءَshort-necked القَفاthe nape وَحْشَةَlean الشَّوىthe limbs

They chatter to a short-necked, lean-limbed bird,
They chatter to dispel the dread of the journey
With the sandgrouse's call—a language long their own.
With their ancient tune, as if lamenting
فبِتْنَso they spent the night قريراتِcontented العيونِthe eyes وقدand already جرىflowed

عليهنّover them شِرْبٌa draught فاستَقيْنَso they drank مُنِيمُlulling to sleep
So they passed the night, their eyes content, for there had flowed
So they slept with blinking eyes after
Over them a sleep-bringing draught, and so they drank:
Drinking their fill, slumbering silently

A stream from a hanging waterskin, with which she had crouched—
The pouring of a youth's waterskin on which they
A tender mother, returning again to water her chicks.
Greedily drank to quench the chicks' thirst again
