    للماء في النحر منها نَوْطةٌ عَجَبُ

    Short-tailed as she turns away, earless as she approaches;

    At her breast she has a wondrous pouch for water.

    She gives a downy chick drink; the water she spits out quenches him.

    And that is a draught after thirst, from her own watering turn.

    في حاجب العين من تسبيده زَبَبُ

    Wide-gaped, his primary feathers have not yet grown;

    On his brow is bristly down from his first feathering.

    She calls 'qaṭā' to a short-stepping chick, who has

    Neither feathers nor down, there before her breast.

    She calls 'qaṭā,' and by that name she is called when she declares her lineage.

    How truthful she is when she calls it and declares her lineage!
