May God reward with good—and recompense is in His palm—
God rewarded with the finest recompense
a young man of ʿUqayl who rose to eminence without strain.
A man of Oqail, who excelled without pretense
فتىًa young man كَانتِwas الدُّنْياthe world تَهُونُcounted for little بأَسْرِهاin its entirety

A young man—the whole world counted for little
To him, capturing the world was inconsequential
to him, and he was ever full of resourcefulness.
Yet he persevered in his every diligence

He accomplished the loftiest undertakings with ease,
He easily attained the highest goals
when they baffled every honored man of skill.
When even the most determined would fail and lose their confidence

He is pure honey—nay, honey from the hives is his likeness,
He is pure (noble) - rather the noblest souls resemble him
mingled with an elixir of shiver-inducing wine from Baysan.
Like a draft of wine from Beisan, well-fermented and intense
فَياso, O تَوْبُTawb ماnot فيin العَيْشِlife خَيْرٌgood وَلاnor نَدىًgenerosity
يُعَدُّis reckoned وَقَدْand now أَمْسَيْتَyou have come to be فيin تُرْبِdust نَفْنفِan open waste
So, O Tawb, there is no good in life, nor generosity
Oh my remorse! In life, neither prosperity nor joy remain
worth reckoning, now that you lie in the dust of an open waste.
Now you lie in dusty ruin and pestilence
وماand not نِلْتُI received مِنْكَfrom you النَّصْفَfair treatment حتَّىuntil ارْتَمَتshot بكat you

And I had not received my due from you before you were struck
I didn't get half enough of you before
by the fates, with a gaunt arrow unerring in its impact.
Death's arrows struck true, to your detriment
فَياso, oh ألفَa thousand ألفٍthousand كُنْتَyou were حَيّاًalive مُسلّماًunharmed
لألْقاكَso I might meet you مِثلَlike القَسْوَرِthe lion المُتَطَرّفِkeeping to the fringes
Oh, a thousand thousand times, would that you were alive and unharmed,
Oh, if only you were alive, I would have found
so I might meet you like a lion keeping to the fringes,
Your equal - like polished armor, magnificent
كَماas كُنْتَyou were إذwhen كنتَyou were المُنَحَّىthe one kept clear منfrom الرّدَىdeath
إذاwhen الخَيْلُthe horses جالَتْwheeled بالقَناwith the spears المتقصِّفِsplintering
as you were when you were kept clear of death,
As you were, when you avoided reproach
when the horses wheeled amid splintering spears.
When the horses charged, decked with gold trappings and opulence
وكَمْand how many مِنْof لَهيفٍa distressed man مُحجَرٍcornered قَدْindeed أجَبْتَهُyou answered him
بأَبْيَضَwith a bright sword قَطّاعِcleaving الضريبةِits target مُرْهَفِkeen-edged
And how many a distressed, cornered man you answered
How many terrified and cowering enemies have you faced
with a bright sword, keen-edged, cleaving whatever it struck.
With your white sword that severs necks, ever diligent
فأنْقَذْتَهُso you rescued him والمَوْتwhile Death يَحْرقُgrinds نابَهُits fang
عَلَيْهِat him ولَمْand not يُطْعَنْbe stabbed ولَمْand not يُتَنَسَّفِbe snatched away
So you rescued him, while Death was grinding its fang
Saving them though death scorched their mouths
at him; he was neither stabbed nor snatched away.
Without being stabbed or blown to bits in violence
