Truly a fine young man you were, O Tawb, when there clashed

the heads of the spears, and their lower ends rose.

And a fine young man you were, O Tawb; you were never

to be outstripped on any day when you strove.

And a fine young man you were, O Tawb, to one afraid

who came to you for protection—and how gracious you were.

And a fine young man, O Tawb, as neighbor and companion,

and a fine young man, O Tawb, when you vied in excellence.

By my life, you are indeed the man whose loss I weep for,

in earnest, even if the reproaching women blame me for it.

By my life, you are indeed the man whose loss I weep for,

and my sleeplessness for him grows; I seek no refuge.

By my life, you are indeed the man whose loss I weep for,

even if an ignorant man of poor judgment blames me on his account.

By my life, you are indeed the man whose loss I weep for,

when tribulations multiply for those trapped in battle.

You were shielded from people's censure, O Tawb, whenever

you were mentioned, by deeds well wrought and complete.

You were shielded from people's censure, O Tawb, whenever

you were mentioned, by generosity when widows sought shelter.

So may God not cast you away, O Tawb; you have only

met death's appointed doom—and death is swift.

And may God not cast you away, O Tawb; indeed,

such are the fates of death: some swift, some delayed.

And may God not cast you away, O Tawb, and may there gather

above you the morning rainclouds, dark and pouring.
