وقائِلةٍand a woman saying والنعشُwhile the bier قدalready فاتَoutstripped خطْوَهاher steps
وقائِلةٍ والنعشُ قد فاتَ خطْوَها
لِتُدْرِكَهso that she might catch up with it ياO لَهْفَanguish of نفسيmy soul علىfor صخرِSakhr
لِتُدْرِكَه يا لَهْفَ نفسي على صخرِ
And a woman said—the bier had outstripped her steps
And she was saying while the bier had gone beyond her reach
as she tried to catch it—“Oh, my soul’s anguish for Sakhr!
"Oh my soul's yearning, hasten to overtake it on the rock!"
ألاAh! ثكِلَتْmay she be bereaved أُمُّthe mother of الذينَthose who غَدَواthey set out بِهِwith him
ألا ثكِلَتْ أُمُّ الذينَ غَدَوا بِهِ
إلىto القَبْرِthe grave ماذاwhat يحملونthey carry إلىto القبرِthe grave
إلى القَبْرِ ماذا يحملون إلى القبرِ
Ah, bereaved be the mother of those who set out with him
"May she lose her children who at dawn bore him away
to the grave! What are they carrying to the grave?”
To the grave! What do people carry to the grave?"
