O abode of ʿAmrah, at her dwelling in al-Jarʿā,
O home of my beloved, though separation from you brings me sorrow and grief,
You stirred in me anxiety, sorrows, and pain.
My heart is filled with sadness and distress at this parting,
تامَتenslaved فُؤاديmy heart بِذاتِat Dhāt الجِزعِal-Jizʿ خَرعَبَةٌa supple young woman

A supple young woman at Dhāt al-Jizʿ enslaved my heart;
The days between us pass, bringing neither hope nor despair,
She passed, seeking the churches at Dhāt al-ʿAdhbah.
Yet your memory always torments me wherever I am.
جَرَّتshe drew لِماfor what بَينَناwas between us حَبلَthe rope of الشُموسِthe restive beast فَلاso neither

She drew a restive beast's rope between us, so neither
With my own eyes I saw their caravan enter the valley,
Clear despair nor hope could you discern from her.
At times visible, at others obscured when the sands shift.

Still, despite the distance, I am kept awake by
But you there, rider racing towards the island tirelessly,
A phantom that seeks my camp wherever it is set.
Deliver a message amongst them that though I obey, my own counsel stands.
إِنّيindeed I بِعَينَيَّwith my two eyes إِذwhen أَمَّتheaded toward حُمولُهُمُtheir laden mounts

With my own eyes I watched as their laden mounts headed
If only your affairs were settled while the people's matters concluded,
Into the valley of al-Salawṭaḥ, not looking at those who followed.
Do you not fear a people who show you no mercy,
طَوراًsometimes أَراهُمُI see them وَطَوراًand sometimes لاnot أُبينُهُمُI discern them

Sometimes I see them, and sometimes cannot discern them;
Who swoop upon you rapidly like preying eagles?
When a curtained howdah dipped, it gleamed for a moment.
Sons of a people who blamed you though God did no harm.

But you, rider, urging your mount onward in haste
Nobles of Persia, sons of kings who command great armies,
Toward al-Jazīrah, seeking a campsite and pasture,
They hasten to you while you gather hay and firewood.
أَبلِغconvey word to إِياداًIyād وَخَلِّلand make your way فيamong سَراتِهِمِtheir chiefs

Carry word to Iyād, and make your way among their chiefs:
You are two factions; one lacks the boldness of lions,
I see the right counsel now made clear, if I am not disobeyed.
The other is destroyed seeking mere sustenance.
ياO لَهفَanguish of نَفسِيَmy soul أَنthat كانَتhave been أُمورُكُمُyour affairs

Alas for my soul, that your affairs should be
An awesome darkness from your border threatens you,
Divided, while others' purpose is made firm and united!
What has made you slumber in heedlessness,
أَلاdo you not تَخافونَfear قَوماًa people لاno أَباfather لَكُمُfor you

Do you not fear a people—no father to you!—
When you see the flames of war already kindled?
Who at evening rush toward you like young locusts?
Please relieve my anxiety with wise counsel that moistens my arid heart,
أَبناءُsons of قَومٍa people تَأَوَّوكُمwho gathered against you عَلىin حَنَقٍrage

لاnot يَشعُرونَthey know أَضَرَّhas harmed اللَهُGod أَمor نَفَعاhas benefited
Sons of a people who have gathered against you in rage,
And be not like one who pretends deafness when asked to relieve distress.
Not knowing whether God has harmed or helped.
Ready your steeds and unsheathe your swords, prepare arrows and spearheads,
أَحرارُnobles of فارِسَPersia أَبناءُsons of المُلوكِkings لَهُمthey have

مِنَamong الجُموعِthe hosts جُموعٌhosts تَزدَهيthat overwhelm القَلَعاfortresses
Persia's nobles, sons of kings; they have
Cloister your women and children lest they perish in panic.
Hosts among their hosts that overwhelm fortresses.
Do not abandon each other to misfortune, as you did at Mount Bishah,
فَهُمso they سِراعٌare hastening إِلَيكُمtoward you بَينَbetween مُلتَقِطٍone gathering

So they hasten toward you: some gathering
Keep watch till their horses are seen returning defeated.
Thorns, and others harvesting bitter ṣāb and poisonous salaʿ.
Let neither worldly wealth nor ambition deceive you,
لَوif أَنَّindeed جَمعَهُمُtheir host رامواthey aimed بِهَدَّتِهِwith its crashing force

If they aimed their host, with its crashing force, at
By clinging to such hopes you will never be revived.
Thahlān's towering summits, it would surely split apart.
My people, do not let your fertile land be ravaged,
فيon كُلِّevery يَومٍday يَسُنّونَthey sharpen الحِرابَthe spears لَكُمfor you

Each day they sharpen their spears for you;
I fear the enemy's axe will strike at its very roots!
They do not sleep when an unwary person sleeps.
O people, do not feel secure about your women,
لاnot الحَرثُtillage يَشغَلُهُمdistracts them بَلrather لاnot يَرَونَthey see لَهُمfor themselves

Tillage does not distract them; indeed, they see for themselves
It is ruin that uproots your origins, who has seen or heard the like?
Neither quenching nor satiety short of your people's heartland.
Appoint your affairs to God, your refuge in war's tumult,
وَأَنتُمُwhile you تَحرُثونَtill الأَرضَthe earth عَنout of سَفَهٍfolly

Yet you till the earth out of foolishness,
Capable at all times whether fortune smiles or frowns.
Seeking land to sow in every place you work.
Not distracted from you by any property or children,
وَتُلقِحونَand you impregnate حِيالَthe unpregnant ones of الشَولِthe dry she-camels آوِنَةًat times

At times you put your unpregnant, dry she-camels to stud,
Your border towns preoccupy him more than anything.
And deliver spring-born calves in an unsettled abode.
He milks fortune's teats unceasingly, triumphant one day, vanquished the next,

You are two factions: one against which
Now pursuing, now pursued.
Even lions' crushing force cannot stand; the other perishes foolishly.
His age has only increased his bitterness and resolve,

Already there looms over you, from the direction of your frontier,
His neck unbending, his claws and fangs intact.
A terror whose dark masses engulf you in patches.
Mighty of arm, fearless, undaunted by war,

Why do I see you asleep in easy comfort,
He challenges all mankind to battle if they dare.
When you can see war's blazing flame already flaring?
I have given you sincere advice without self-interest,
فَاِشفواso heal غَليليmy burning anguish بِرَأيٍwith counsel مِنكُمُfrom you حَسَنٍsound

So cure my burning anguish with sound counsel from you,
So awaken, the best knowledge is that which benefits.
By which my heart becomes refreshed, its thirst quenched.
This message I send, consider it a warning,

Do not be like one who spends the night cowering,
He who sees the wisdom in it, and he who hears.
Who, when told, 'Dispel this distress,' shrinks back.
With eyes like a coward's yet awe-striking fangs,

Protect your noble steeds and polish your swords,
His brilliance shines like lightning through pitch darkness.
And renew the arrows and bowstrings for your bows.

And sell your ancestral wealth to safeguard yourselves
Adorned in clothes of safety while this lion gathers his strength.
And safeguard your women; do not perish in panic.
He hungers and believes wealth will preserve him,

Let none of you abandon another to calamity,
Grasping at any fortune he stumbles upon greedily.
As you abandoned al-Nakhaʿ in upper Bīshah.
Ready your steeds, summon your resolve, steel yourselves with patience not despair,

If overcome in your lands, you will meet with calamity.
Until the horses are seen coming back from their gallop.
Do not be destroyed defending camels not your own,

Let neither worldly life nor greed deceive you:
The enemy aims to deal you a massive blow.
You will not revive that hope through mere resolve.
Do not produce wealth for your enemies, if they prevail

If you are severed at the roots nothing will restore them.
Of your women—Kisrā and all he has mustered.

Seeking from them a vantage over the enemy.
