أَلاAh! ثَكِلَتكَmay she be bereaved of you أُمُّكَyour mother عَبدَAbd (servant of) عَمرٍوAmr
أَبالخِزياتis it through shameful deeds? آخَيتَyou fraternized with المُلوكاthe kings
Ah, may your mother be bereaved of you, Abd Amr!
Alas, may your mother lose you, slave of Amr
Is it through shameful deeds that you have befriended the kings?
You have made friends with despicable kings
هُمُthey دَحُّوكَthey battered you لِلوَرِكَينto both hips دَماًblood
وَلَوand had سَأَلواthey asked لأَعطَيتyou would surely have given البُروكاkneeling
They battered you till blood reached both hips,
They tricked you into shedding blood
and had they asked, you would surely have offered to kneel.
And if they had asked, you would have given them clothes
فَيَومُكَso your day عِندَwith مومَسَةٍa prostitute هَلوكٍwanton
كَصِلَّlike a viper الرَّجعthe rainwater pool مِزهَرُهاher lute ضَحوكاlaughing often
So you spend your day with a wanton prostitute,
So your day is with a wretched prostitute
her lute like the viper of the rain-pool, while you laugh.
Whose smile at daybreak is like wilted flowers
