May my people never perish, those who are

poison to their enemies and the bane of slaughter-camels,

    who enter every battlefield,

and are pure at the knots of their waistcloths,

who strike in the thick of battle when it descends,

    and thrust with hairy arms,

and mingle their silver with their gold,

and the wealthy among them with the poor.

If they drink, they give; and if they abstain,

they counsel one another against foul speech.

A people who, when they ride, you hear from them

a clamor of urging calls and goading cries,

without any obscenity on their part,

where fillies and colts are foaled.

They met their doom on the morning of Qulab,

driven like a sacrificial beast led to sacrifice.

    فَإِذا هَلَكتُ أَجَنَّني قَبري

    This is my praise of them as long as I live;

then, when I die, my grave will conceal me.
