  1. وما يغني توقي الموت شيئاً

    ولا عقد التميم ولا الغضار

    And guarding against death avails nothing,

    nor does tying on amulets or charm beads,

  2. إذا لاقى منيته فأمسى

    يساق به وقد حق الحذار

    when he meets his appointed death and by evening

    is led away, with dread now proved justified;

  3. ولاقاه من الأيام يوم

    كما من قبل لم يخلد قدار

    and a day among the days befalls him,

    just as Qudar before him did not live forever.
