I have a tongue sharp as a sword if I brandish it,

And my frame is wasted, while my heart is undiminished.

    فَلَمْ يَبْقَ إِلَّا مَنْطِقٌ لَيْسَ يَهْذِرُ

    I have grown old, and time has consumed my vigor and my strength;

So nothing remains but speech that does not babble,

And within my breast, a valiant, well-tempered heart:

Whenever it sees a harsh day, it stands firm.

I intend many things, but I am held back

By a soul's will, for it has no power.

The days have toyed with me and left me

Shorn of my hump, bewildered when I look.

I see one figure as two, and the old man is fond

Of saying 'I see' of what, by God, he does not see.
