و الشمس تشرق و الملا لاهي
Today is the first day of the year, and yesterday was the last of the old year.

The sun rises while the mullah is distracted
فيin ساحةthe arena العمرlife كلeveryone(نindefinite ending (tanwin)) يقرعbeats طبولهhis drums
في ساحة العمر كل(ن) يقرع طبوله
ماشفتI have not seen للنفسfor the soul عنfrom دربthe path الخطاwrongdoing ناهيone who restrains
ماشفت للنفس عن درب الخطا ناهي
In the arena of life, everyone beats his own drums.
In the field of life, everyone beats their drums
I have seen no one keep the soul from the path of wrongdoing.
I have not seen the soul turn away from the path of error
كلeveryone(نindefinite ending (tanwin)) علىaccording to ماتبيwhat it wants نفسهhis soul يطربهاdelights it

وand الذهنthe mind عنof عبرةthe lesson ايامthe days الدهرtime ساهيheedless
و الذهن عن عبرة ايام الدهر ساهي
Everyone delights his soul with whatever it desires.
Everyone indulges in what pleases their soul
And the mind is heedless of the lessons of time's passing days.
While the mind forgets the lessons of the days of fate
ياO غافلheedless القلبat heart لاdo not يغريكbeguile you زاهيهاits splendor
يا غافل القلب لا يغريك زاهيها
أفطنtake heed ترىknow that الوردthe rose مايبطيdoes not last long وwhile هوit زاهيradiant
أفطن ترى الورد مايبطي و هو زاهي
O you heedless at heart, do not let its splendor beguile you.
O heedless heart, do not be fooled by its beauty
Take heed: the rose does not remain radiant for long.
Be wise, you see the rose does not last even in bloom
ياجامعO amasser of المالwealth يامنO you who غايتهhis aim دنياworldly life
ياجامع المال يامن غايته دنيا
وشwhat حيلتكyour recourse فيin غيابthe absence المالwealth وand الجاهِstatus
وش حيلتك في غياب المال و الجاهِ
O amasser of wealth, you whose aim is worldly life,
O gatherer of wealth, whose only aim is this world
What recourse have you when wealth and status are gone?
What will you do when wealth and status are gone?
دنياكyour world لوeven if زخرفتwas adorned لكfor you شمسهاits sun واضحتand shone brightly
دنياك لو زخرفت لك شمسها واضحت
ترىknow that البلاcalamity فيin خباياthe hidden depths ليلهاits night راهيabundant
ترى البلا في خبايا ليلها راهي
Even if your world's sun is adorned for you and shines brightly,
If your world were adorned for you and its sun shone bright
Know that calamity abounds in the hidden depths of its night.
You would see the afflictions hidden in the darkness of its night
لابدthere must be للدربfor the road مهماhowever طالتit grows long نهايهan end
لابد للدرب مهما طالت نهايه
وand العمرlife لوeven if طالlasts long بهin it حبلthe rope الرجاhope واهيfrail
و العمر لو طال به حبل الرجا واهي
Every road, however long, must have an end.
The path must reach its end no matter how long it is
And however long life lasts, the rope of hope within it is frail.
And life, however taut the rope of hope is stretched, will fade
الرّابحthe winner الليthe one who نسيمthe breeze الحظfortune لهfor him ذعذعblew gently
الرّابح اللي نسيم الحظ له ذعذع
قدّاهguided him ربهhis Lord علىon التقوىpiety ولاand did not تاهِstray
قدّاه ربه على التقوى ولا تاهِ
The winner is the one for whom fortune's breeze has gently blown:
The winner is one who, with the breeze of fortune blowing,
His Lord guided him to piety, and he did not stray.
Has been guided by his Lord to piety and did not go astray
