O you chasing the one who has gone, let him go his own way.
O you who chase what's gone, leave it be
The shadow cannot be straight if its stick is crooked.
A crooked branch won't grow straight, you see

Nor does saying 'poor him!' help the regretful.
Regret won't help when you bemoan your plight
A burrow that stung your right hand—no, do not return to it.
A snake-bitten hole, don't go back, take flight

Cast your gaze over my Lord's creation; contemplate it closely.
Look closely at my Lord's creations and ponder
If something is lacking in one respect, another makes up for it.
How state after state He decreases and increases in splendor

God has given the sufferer his ailment and his cure.
God gives the afflicted consolation and cure
And each person's limits are set by his heart's resolve.
And all are bounded by the limits their hearts endure
