واسمع انه من ركب موجه دوى

من فعل موجه غريقه بستجير

And I hear that whoever rides its waves cries out;

And he who is hit by its wave, pleads as he drowns

because of its waves' force, its drowning victim pleads for rescue.

Listen, he who touches its shore goes astray

واسمع انه من لمس شطه غوى

ما يفرق بين بحره والغدير

ما يفرق بين بحره والغدير

And I hear that whoever touches its shore goes astray,

Unable to distinguish between its sea and pond

unable to tell its sea from a pool.

Listen, he who intends to ride it

واسمع انه من على تركه نوى

واسمع انه من على تركه نوى

يجذبه سحره ويرجع له كسير

يجذبه سحره ويرجع له كسير

And I hear that whoever resolves to leave it,

Is drawn by its charm and returns broken

its spell draws him back, and he returns to it broken.

If it wounds his heart and he pines

لو تجرح فيه قلبه واكتوى

لو تجرح فيه قلبه واكتوى

ما يتوب ولا يريح ويستخير

ما يتوب ولا يريح ويستخير

Even if his heart is wounded by it and scorched,

He will not repent, rest or seek guidance

he neither repents nor pauses to seek God's guidance.

Is the beauty of love in the bitter cup

They enticed me till my heart passionately loved it

رغبوني لين قلبي له هوى

Eager, fearful and confused all at once

longing yet averse—the fearful are bewildered.

It is true that passion has no echo
