My heart, which a twist of fate has wrung,
The nights and ill fortune have wounded it.

من يلوم المفارق عقب فرقا خويّه
By God, among people I feel as though I were alone in the wilds.
Who can blame the parted one after separation from his companion?

I bear witness that parting is among the gravest calamities.
But this is your lot, O wretched eyes.

If only the people of passion and love had a judge to hear their cases,

I am like a sufferer torn apart by cautery irons;
Whenever he groans aloud, they give him another burn.
