In my exile, I crossed paths with a caravan of strangers.

I set out and make camp; the nights are my mounts.

Opposites and peers, enemies and friends.

    Humankind's contradictions—not one was missing.

I keep vigil with the dreamy drifting of my loved ones' stars,

Until the star has melted away by morning.

I greet a laughing and wondrous dawn,

And greet the evening with whispers—a veil over wonders.

And on the path of life's pursuits, it began tugging at me—

A youthful spirit, held in check by an old man's mind.

I walked on scorching ground and climbed the uplands.

And torrents crossed my path, and gusts of wind blew.

And I spent the evening in a desert and took my midday rest in a forest.

And whoever spends long in exile sees wonders.

A tear passed me by, with yearning still unmelted within it.

In longing's exile, it drifted away with the winds.

A smile passed me by, as though a veil lay over it.

Why are you shy, O messenger of loved ones?

And love—I came upon him, a stranger at a door.

Once he had palaces; now his palaces lay in ruins!

I wanted to console his heart after he had grown gray.

I found he had no desire for consolation.

He turned away with those departing, fearful and doubtful,

Bitterly reproaching time for its ingratitude.

In my exile, I came upon walkers and riders—

Sustenance—gifts from the Lord of all creatures.
