God is greatest! How eyes can wound!
God is the Greatest, how eyes can wound
How is it that one wounded by an eye never heals?
How tears never dry from the eyes

اثر رمش العين ما ياوي لاحـد
I thought the lashes, when lowered languidly, were tender;
I reckon eyelashes have no mercy
It turns out the eye’s lashes show no mercy to anyone.
The effect of eyelash doesn't go away

When he gently cast a glance at me with his eye,
The day he looked at me gently
My heart leapt for him, applauded, and trembled.
My heart jumped, clapped and trembled

That glance enveloped me like clouds and rain-laden clouds;
He enveloped me like clouds and rain
In my eyes was lightning, and in my heart, thunder.
Lightning in my eyes and thunder in my heart

It reopened my wounds and dealt me fresh stabs.
He renewed my wounds and added stabs
I said, “Enough”; his eyes said, “More.”
I said: enough, but his eyes said more

وانثنى عـوده وقفـى وابتعـد
And that hair curved over the shoulders,
And that's how this poem bent over meanings
And his figure swayed; he turned away and moved off.
And its meter broke, stopped and went away

The enchanting eye’s glance preoccupied me;
A glance from those flirty eyes occupied me
It bewildered me with threats and promises.
Confused me with threats and promises

لى خذت قلبي وقفت يـا سعـد
Does the eye have such license, or does it not,
Do they complete the eye or not complete?
When it has taken my heart and turned away, O Saad?
For me, they took my heart when they stopped, oh happy one
