اباI want اروّضI tame الفكرهthe thought علىto suit حاليmy state الجاريcurrent
I ran after my fugitive, rebellious thoughts.
I want to tame thought to fit my present state.
اباI want اقضبI grasp عنانthe reins of الطامحthe aspiring one الجامحthe unbridled one العاصيthe defiant one
اباI want المسI touch حنانthe tenderness of الساهمthe pensive one الحالمthe dreaming one الساريthe night-wanderer
I want to seize the reins of the aspiring, unbridled rebel.
I want to touch the tenderness of the pensive, dreaming night-wanderer.
اباI want اجمعI gather شتاتيmy scattered self عقبafter رحلاتjourneys غرباتيmy sojourns away from home
واناغمand I harmonize هواجيسيmy musings علىwith باكيthe weeping of اوتاريmy strings
I want to gather my scattered self after my journeys far from home.
And harmonize my musings with the weeping of my strings.

وطالتand lengthened مسافاتيmy distances واناand I اطاردI pursue افكاريmy thoughts
I am weary, and my path has wounded me, O people of knowledge.
And my journeys lengthened as I pursued my thoughts.

Why do they vanish beyond the present of my days?
Why do they travel beyond my power to journey?

وراهاwhy do they تطيرfly وكليand all of me قيودshackles واعذارِand excuses
Why do they show my helplessness for my eyes to see?
Why do they fly while I am all shackles and excuses?

اغازلI woo سحاباتيmy clouds واناand I اكتبI write لهاfor them اشعاريmy poems
It imprisoned me, cast me into the dust, while the sky is my dream.
I woo my clouds as I write my poems for them.

واقولand I say امطريrain! ياغيمتيO my cloud جفتhave dried up انهاريmy rivers
I send my voice to them with the passing breeze.
And I say, 'Rain, my cloud—my rivers have run dry.'

لاneither باحrevealed ليto me سرّهits secret ولاnor بحتI spoke openly باسراريof my secrets
And night falls upon me empty, and I am empty too.
It has not revealed its secret to me, nor have I revealed my secrets.

The stars of heaven strike sparks, and my night lies still among them.
Strange is the stillness of a night in which the heavens move.

And O my fleeing thought, O my setting light,
Without you, my moths have tumbled upon my fire.

And even if I excuse others, I do not excuse my thoughts.
I am my thoughts' homeland, and the home of thought is my home.
